drive shaft help
« on: May 06, 2008, 06:01:23 PM »
hi im putting the marlin 4" lift (5" springs in rear) and dual cases under my 4runner. i was gonna buy a front drive shaft from someone that was for a dual case set up and h said it has 6" of slip, but im also going to be running a hp elocker up front so would that add some extra slip to it and if so would that be enough to keep my shaft from disconnecting when im flexin?

6" is pretty short on slip. I know it would come apart on my rig.

if you wanna do some 4 hi stuff I would actually steer away from a square shaft. even if you check and double check measurements it is still next to impossible to balance. this is going to turn into more of a debate really but if you already have the shaft, then cut out the tube thats on it and re-weld a piece that is longer so it will fit. you will be much happier with a round over a square

I've got 5" all pro's and I've pulled apart my front driveshaft with 10" of spline so I would say yes you need more slip.  I had it lengthened 2" and haven't had a problem since but 6" is cutting it a little close.  Square driveshafts belong in the Fontucky fab section, I would't recommend it.  Even if your local driveline shop doesn't work with long travel stuff it isn't that hard to go to a farm supply store and get farm implement spline and shaft and just have the shop weld it together and balance it for you.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Thats a pretty strong statement. I'd put my square shaft against a round one, implement, or profeshionally built, any time strength wise! Square round or triangle , it really is a matter of opinion.

We'll see Gittinit.  If I don't it ain't cus I'm worried about a driveshaft breakin.  Maybe if you would bend up a jungle gym on my truck like you got I would.  I just don't like square shafts cus I don't care what anybody says, they can't be balanced.  I hear it from everybody blah blah blah.  I can do 50mph and no vibration blah blah blah.  I just don't believe it.  I never said they are inferior strengthwise.

I didn't know a long travel driveline is $300... I was thinking more around half that.
