Newbie form Missouri
« on: Jul 12, 2004, 04:47:27 PM »
Just checking in, I'm new to this bb.  I'm just starting to build my "trail rig", no real rocks to crawl on around here. :shake_head:  I have a nice stock '85 4-runner to build.  I am just waiting on the $$ to start this build-up.  What mods should I start with, for a woods and hill climbing rig?? I also use this as a daily driver.  This is a great bb.

It has EFI, I tried to post a picture, but I guess I don't know how. :dunno:  I have small swampers on it right now 29x11.50x15.  I want to add enough lift to fit 33s or 35s. Only other mod is vented disk brakes from landcruiser and a larger brake booster and master cylinder.  Does any one use a
No-slip by powertrax for a locker?  If so, do you like it?

I live an hour and a half south of St.Louis.  Do you know of any trails in MO?  The closes place for me is Land Between the Lakes, in KY.  What mods do you have on your truck?

well, i usually go to a place in Kansas. Called Tuttle Creek. As for the rig, 1983 shortbed, rears up front, chevy rears. hy-steer, and some other stuff. But that was stolen just a few weeks ago. Right now, I'm working on an 86 EFI pickup.

Sorry to hear about your 83, that really $ucks.  If someone stole my ride I would be pissed off.  What type of terrain is that, around KC.  Is it hills and woods, or something else?

Well, Tuttle Creek has a lot of different stuff. Mud, rocks, and some nasty hills. there's also a bunch of ledges there.

Yeah my 83 being stolen was a kick in the a#*. But I'll build a better one this time around. the truck is a total loss. Which kinda sucks cause it was a rust free shortbed. At least all the imporant stuff is still fine. And I now have all the stuff to SAS my 86. Plus some extra parts. One can never have too many of those...

welding the rear was an option, but I use it as a daily driver.  I think I will buy the aussie locker for the rear, and if  i don't destroy it, i will put it in the front when i get the $$$ for a detroit for the rear.  I would like to see pics of you 86 when you have the sas complete.

Turtle creek sounds like a good place to wheel... when i get the 85 done, I'lll have to give it a try!!

Good luck with the Aussie locker. I've heard that there was a pretty long wait to get one. But that's just word of mouth. If you're interested about Tuttle Creek. I've got some pics of things there. Just Email me at Roktoy84@aol.com. I usually go with my brother and two cousins.

the aussie came in friday, just got it installed today.  Install was pretty easy, but the back brakes are a PITA to replace.  wheel cylinder was leaking so i rebuilt both side and installed new brakes.....why didn't they put a cool disk brake set up on right from the factory. I hate replacing drum brakes.

the aussie works great!  it is easy to install, takes a little longer than the manufacturer suggest, but still a over-all easy install. the hardest part of the whole job is taking off the ring gear so you can slide out the cross shaft and spiders. On road, it is a little louder than I thought it would be.  You can hear a slight racheting sound at low speed in the parking lots. I don't have any complaints with it on the road, I can't tell any difference from an open diff.  Off road this thing is amazing.  A steep off-camber hill, I could not climb when the ground was dry, I was able to go up right after a rain!  After I save a little more money($264.00 with shipping included) I will have one in the front.  To me this is the best bang for the buck.

Glad to hear about the locker. How long did it take to get to you? I thought about getting one. But then again, I also thought about welding the front. And building hydro assist. To me, it would almost be easier to do that than throw a locker in...   Did you get the pics I sent?????

I finally checked my mail. turtle creek looks like a great place to go.  Good pics by the way.  Sorry about not getting back with you sooner.  The aussie arive in 7 days, It would have been a little quicker if I didn't order it after hours on friday. Rocktoy when I get my lift and tires I'll be ready to go!

trailkrawlers4x4.org is another good place for pics of Tuttle. It's the local club there. They're having thier Kansas Krawl at the end of Sept. I might go. Just depends on if I get another toy to play with there. If not, then I'll prob. go anyways.

Sorry for such a long time before responding.  Guess I am spending too much time on the Pirate board.  There is a place called Make it or Break it 4 Wheelers.  Its just south of Knoxville Iowa.  The club website is MIOBI.org  I have been down there a few times with my Tacoma.  Unfortunately my 4Runner is taking a lot longer then expected.  Once its done I plan to go almost every weekend.  The other places I have been to in Iowa are a joke compared to MIOBI.org.

I'd be up for a trip to Mark Twain.  Hate to say it, but I havn't done much to the truck lately. I have installed an aussie locker up front.  I have been buying a little at time, but don't have it on the truck yet.
I have a set of marlins rock sliders and AP 4" springs in the basement.  I just don't have much time to work on the truck.  Have you seen the www.moroc.us website.  I am going to try to make it to the trail ride in Feb.
