4:70 in the Transfer or 5.29 in the pumpkins ?
« on: May 05, 2008, 11:34:33 AM »
I have an 85 std cab with a dual Tcase 2.28/2.28. I have 4.88 gears. Im looking to move up from 33" to 37" tires.  Which would be money better spent,  Going to 4.70 / 4.70 in the Tcase or 5.29 in the pumpkins ?

  Thanks,

          John

You'll want both eventually, but 4.88s with 37s on the street would stink.  On the flip side, I enjoyed my dual ultimate gearing with my 4.88 and 35's so off road I'd prefer the 4.70 gears.

488s are a good match for 33-35 inch tires...puts you close to stock gear range...

529s and 35-37" tires are also close to stock range

488 and 37 seems awful high to me

why?

My 4Runner with 4.88s and 35's performs adequately, but for daily driver use I would love to have 5.29s.  The differentials are geared for the 33s I had on my 85 truck.  As it is I run the timing advanced with premium fuel (considering going back to regular grade fuel) to squeeze all the available hp out of the 22RE.  I can hardly use 5th gear on the highway.

To match "stock" gearing with 4.88s I believe it would be a 34 inch tires but you have to remember the larger tires weigh significantly more and often are wider yielding more drag, plus lifted truck are far less aerodynamic.  37's would simply be too much for me to use as a daily driver.

As for the 4.70 gears, while in Moab I found myself in low-low 1st and 2nd on almost every difficult spot.  With the weight of the 4Runner and the traction on the rocks it wanted to bog down in higher gears.

i wonder about his setup of the gears in that case, most people do not blow up 5.29s and i have seen some jsut beat the crap out of their trucks....

:psss: I say 4.70 t-case gears and 35 inch tires.  The difference is about an inch in ground clearance and you like it much better on the street.  :twocents:

a professional shop here in town set them up, had a great pattern, didnt last one trip out with 38.5 tsl's, the gears are his weakest link in his drivetrain, so now he is rockin 60/14b  axles

To late I got a little ahead of myself on a good deal and bought the 37's. Still have plenty of tread on the 33's so I have time to make the mods needed.

4.88s since day 1 owning my truck for almost 5 years now. 35s and 37s. it doesnt bother me. i have the 3.0 so its just generally slow period. i could see why having 5.29s in my truck would help give it a bit more get up. im going on my 3rd r/p up front now though.

ive got 5.29's w/ dual 2.28's on 33's and man does it suck goin down the highway. and no its not a DD. ill be switchin to 38 tsl's in the summer. my concern about that is will it be low enough on the trail?

and to answer the thread question.
ive had a lot of 22r trucks and they all have had different driving patterns, as far as power band wise. i think the gearing all depends on where the power band is for that particular truck. i had one with a really low power(2000rpm-2500rpm) band that ran better with 4:10's and 33's than 4:88's and 33's. then i had one that was really high(between 3000rpm and 4000rpm) and it prefered the 4:88's with 33's.

this may sound like hogwash to everybody but i have had 5 different yota 22RE's and none of them have ran the same, similar but not the same.

When you make the jump to 38s your performance will greatly increase both on the street and on the trail. i drove around for a while with 32s and 529s and it sucked.

You could go with the 4.7's in the case and keep the 33's for street duty and put on bigger tires for wheeling if you cant decide.

I put the 37's on last night.  It runs alot better than I thought it would . I think the 4:88's are a little high for pulling grades but should be no problem around town.  I picked up a v6 third and a Detroit so I think I'm going to go with the 5:29 gears move my Aussie up front and run it for the summer. If gas over the summer doesn't kill me I'll add the 4.7 tcase in the winter.

Thanks for all the input I really appreciate it.

If you go 4.70 in the rear case you will have three options instead of two.  4.70 is slightly higher gearing than 2.28x2.28 but give you the option of 2.28x4.70 so you can't go wrong.
