if your son is anything like most wheelers, he would love that truck.  Im guessing your son is turning 16 or there abouts?  If you buy a truck that needs a little work, he will learn how to work on vehicles, that is why i bought mine, its a project truck and i have learned more about cars in the last 3 months than i have learned in the past 19 years.  it looks like s sick truck from the pics, with the v8 conversion and a system already.  Just my :twocents: since i was in his shoes not too long ago.  My dad said the same thing, im not buying you a truck your going to be putting money into and working on all the time.  What did i do?  two years later i bought a truck that im pouring money into and working on all the time.  Its a love hate relationship with my truck.

Might help us to find him the right truck if you tell us what he is looking for too and what kind of wheeling, if any, he will be doing.  Is this a b-day present?

No its not his b-day present, im just helping him pay for it. He wants something with a lift, less than 120,000 miles on it, and hes not going 2 be doing alot of crazy wheeling, just some easy stuff, like a trail raited between a 3-6

Is he crazy?  120,000 miles is nothing for a toy, 150,000 is nothing for a toy.  Hell, my 91 has over 200,000 on the stock engine and still has high 190 psi compression with all cylinders within 3 lbs of each other.  Getting that specific with that low of mileage for a toyota is going to be pigeon holing him and really limiting his search!

One kid I know bought his 92 with over 300,000 miles on the original 22re, and although it was a little slow, it still ran fine. I bet all it needs is a re-ring and timing chain and its good to go for another 100,000 miles at least.

Thats more like it! :yesnod: My 85 had 154,000 on it and it came out of CO, and my 88 had 188,000 on it, and it ran perfectly. Look around and you will find one. Good luck!

What specifically are you looking for?  IFS, solid axle, carbed, fuel injected, 4 cyl, 6 cyl, ?  :dunno:

I can't speak for CO, but I know on the west coast, toys hold their value really well.  Its getting harder and harder to find toys with less than 200K miles on them, simply due to the fact that they do run forever.  With the specifications you've given us, you won't find what you are looking for.  Any vehicle with 150-200K miles on it is going to need some work.  It may not be serious drivetrain work, but wires get brittle, the paint gets faded, bearings wear out, etc.  Good thing is, you are on the right track.  Toyotas are very durable, fairly easy to work on, and will be a great learning experience for your son

Don't know where you are in CO, but here are some I found on denver's craigslist:

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/641510570.html

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/643338134.html

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/640640666.html

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/639931224.html

Personally,  I would stay away from the 3.0, if you want to avoid working on the truck.  I've had 3 of them in one truck, and while they can be good motors, their reputation speaks against them.

What BLACKDOG said about low milage toys around here is correct (I am in WY fyi).

My 85 (154,000 miles) had a bad motor, a little rust, no tailgate, and faded/chipped paint. The 88 had a perfect drivetrain (engine runs EXCELLENT, never rebuilt, 190,000 on it now) but had been rolled and the interior was trashed due to having no roof for who knows how long. I got both for $1500.

After a little work (put 88 tailgate, axle, and engine in 85 truck) and selling off parts of the 88, I have a good running 85 pickup for around $900.

Now I am building the original engine, not because it needs it, but because I am stupid, and WANT experience. :hammerhead:

ALSO this was my first truck(s) bought when I was I think 14. Now I am 17, and I am loving every minute of all the experience I get working on my truck.

Stay away from 3.0 trucks/4runners.

If you go for the first one (looks way too nice for me, I would be afraid I would trash it) ask if it had the head gasket recall done.

3.0 = BLOWN HEADGASKETS. There was a recall done for it, and if it has not had the recall done, I would be a little iffy. They tend to blow headgaskets a lot, like ever 20,000 miles (a kid I know has one in his 89 4runner and regrets it all the time). Plus the engine bays are a little cramped, well at least the 2nd gen ones are, I am not too sure on the 3rd gen engine bays.

The truck may have a lot of life, but does the 3.0? Thats the real question. Personally I would just go for the 4 cyl one. :twocents:
