I just finished rebuilding my front axle and the kit i had came with 4 thin shims and 4 thick shims... i ended up using one thick and one thin on each, top and bottom. i think the only thing that matters though is how much force it takes to turn the knuckle (12-15lbs. i think), the shims adjust that.

yes  start  with 1 thick and 1 thin on both top and bottom caps
if you are using Marlins  kit  i can almost garrantee that  will be perfect

if its too loose  remove a thin from the top,  if STILL  too loose  remove the thin from the bottom

Not true. I believe the bottom ones are used to center the knuckle, and the top ones are to set preload on the knuckle. I am pretty sure thats right... maybe not. I think OOPS explained it to me once. That being said, I did one thick and one thin on both the top and bottom, and it all worked out just fine.

If you run Marlin's new Super Seals the centering of the knuckle is not as critical as with the stock seals. Pre-load on the bearings is critical, especially if you are running some big, wide meats.
