2008 X-prize: Lunar Lander
« on: Apr 07, 2008, 11:19:12 PM »
Friend of mine is working with the Paragon Labs Team and on this past Sunday I had the opportunity to help, work on and test the rocket engine for their vehicle. Here is some info from some sites:

The Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge is designed to accelerate commercial technological developments supporting the birth of a new generation of Lunar Landers capable of ferrying payloads or humans back and forth between lunar orbit and the lunar surface. Such a vehicle would have direct application to NASA’s space exploration goals as well as the personal spaceflight industry. Additionally, the challenge will help industry develop the operational capacity to launch quick turnaround vertical take-off, vertical landing vehicles, which will be of significant use to many facets of the commercial launch procurement market.

The Competition is divided into two levels. Level 1 requires a rocket to take off from a designated launch area, rocket up to 150 feet (50 meters) altitude, then hover for 90 seconds while landing precisely on a landing pad 100 meters away. The flight must then be repeated in reverse—and both flights, along with all of the necessary preparation for each, must take place within a two and a half hour period.

The more difficult course, Level 2, requires the rocket to hover for twice as long before landing precisely on a simulated lunar surface, packed with craters and boulders to mimic actual lunar terrain. The hover times are calculated so that the Level 2 mission closely simulates the power needed to perform the real lunar mission.

And A video and some pictures off my phone sorry about the quality.....

This was the four second test, if you count to two the gasket blew on the test and you can hear and see the change in thrust...

Here nozzle constructed from stainless steel...

This holds the Liquid Oxygen, insulated to keep it from boiling off at -300 C

Three bottles of Nitrogen to pressurize the E85 ethanol fuel, followed by two Helium to pressurize the LOX

The tank on this side holds E85 the combination of that and LOX there could blow that pond up lol

Test stand i help build goes eight feet into the ground with a 4'x4' 1" plate welded to the bottom in the ground

Some Valve and other pictures

Yes i will be, there will be two more tests on that test stand and ten the actual vehicle test will start. Thosr test the vehicle will be tethered to a crane and take off from a stand and then free fall
