elocker wont completely disengage.
« on: Mar 22, 2008, 07:55:05 AM »
I swapped in this elocker into my 4runner.  You can hear the motor moving but when the locker is off the truck doesn't move. The driveshaft spins and the axles don't. If I hit the locker it works and the shafts/truck moves. So what did I screw up on this thing?  Is there a problem with the locker?

Sounds like the motor isn't getting enough voltage so it is weak.  Check what voltage its getting, if its getting full 12 volts minimum I'd save money over buying another motor and convert it to cable.

Thanks,  I'll check it.  At least if its the motor I can fix that without yanking the 3rd.  I'm in a time crunch to get this done.

Is the Downey cable the only one available?

Do you think there could be an internal problem that would require yanking the 3rd?

Pull the motor and see if you can get it to fully engage/disengage by hand.

If it is the front I have been told the cable will not work, not enough room.

there's no  place in the elocker  that would be  a "neutral"   if the drive shaft is spinning and the axles (at least 1) arent turning you have stripped teeth off the pinion

if  one axle turns  or  both turn  then you need to pull the motor,  lock it or unlock it by hand,  this is what we call "timing the e locker"

That may be true with the downey cable setup....

Nope, I have the tall marlin hoops mounted up on a 2wd frame (same shape as a solid axle frame) so they sit very high in the engine bay.  Unless I had at least 15" bbcs shocks I'd lose downtravel. ;)

I going to look at it now.  But the ring and pinion are new and have never been on the road (except from moving it in the driveway).

What does this mean!!!

I pulled the motor and manually engaged the locker.  When it is manually engaged ONLY the Driver's side wheel spins.  When it is manually disengaged nothing is connected and neither wheel spins.

Am I missing spider gears or something?  What is going on?!

Just got done yanking the 3rd.  The passenger side splines are not connected to the spider gears.  I can spin the pinion and the splines don't move.  If I move the splines the spider gears don't move.

I don't know anything about these things and have never seen an exploded view.  Are the splines supposed to be in 2 pieces?  Like an inner (connected to the spider gears) and an outer that just floats?

Something must be missing in there or broken?  Is it possible this would not have been caught during R&P setup?

The yellow arrow points to the outer splines that spin freely.  The red arrow points to the inner splines that appear to be connected to the side gears and spider gears.  I turned the splines so they don't line up so it would show up in the picture better.  Might be hard to see.  Sorry about the grease, I greased the axle shaft splines during the install.

Is there supposed to be a split there?  Seems to be one on both sides of the carrier.

Dammit!!!  You are correct, I just confirmed this with someone who has an elocker on his workbench.

Can those be replaced or do I have to change the whole carrier?

I need a (edit: another)

Anyone have an elocker for sale with a good carrier?

Found out Toyota does sell the parts.  Likely special order.  Price is better than buying another used elocker but not by much.  $340 at an online Toyota dealer.  Ouch!

Should I also assume the spider gears and side gear bearings are bad.  Thats $$ too.  i need a  or 3
