:o Holy cow!!

Was there something inside the Box that was getting caught between the low speed gear and the counter shafter that caused so much pressure on the counter shaft bearing that it killed it, maybe? Wow :o

BigMike - have you taken a look at the Trail Creeper gears from TG to compare the strength?

Ok guys, I searched and searched and searched and I've finally found my super old comparison post about our 4.70:1 Gear Set compared to the A/A 5.0:1 set that I posted on the pirates bbs along time ago..

......

Here is the raw data:
Marlin Crawler 4.70:1 Gear Set:
 Input Gear: 20 teeth
 Idler Gear: 35 and 16
 Low Spd Gear: 43

A/A 5:1 Gear Set:
 Input Gear: 20 teeth
 Idler Gear: 37 and 16
 Low Spd Gear: 43

Actual Ratios:
Marlin Crawler 4.70:1 Gear Set: (35/20) x (43/16) = 4.703125:1
A/A 5:1 Gear Set: (37/20) x (43/16) = 4.971875:1

.........

Well here are some physical differences:

........

..........

.........

Regards,
BigMike

I see that a competitor is now selling 5.7:1 gears, got any comparision info on those???? Is Marlin planning on selling these?

You better provide a link.  I have heard of 4.0:1, 4.7:1, 4.97:1 & 5.0:1 (really 4.97:1 gears), but not 5.7:1.   :dunno:

Trail Gear has a set of 6.5:1 gears for a Samurai, are you looking at a Sami gear set?

From what I know, the 4.70:1 design was chosen because it maximized the available space in the stock t-case housing.  This is why the 4.97:1 gear set is the same diameter and just added two additonal teeth.  It seems that in order to get a 5.7:1 reduction, it would take a bunch more super thin teeth which would be significantly weaker than anything else on the market.

I believe he is talking about Advance Adapters.

I believe he is talking about Advance Adapters.

https://eshop.advanceadapters.com/commerce/catalog/spcategory.jsp?category_id=1387&czuid=1166756465332

They only go up to 5.0:1, but I'm confused about the "stock" 2.06:1.

I assume if Marlin were to come out with a 5.70:1 you won't hear until it hits the shelves.  I would think that it might be better as far as gear strength goes to just add a 3rd strength.

http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=68

Here is the link.

In my opinion, a single 4.70:1 gearset is bordering on too low due to the loss of a middle range of gears that come in handy quite often.  A dual ultimate setup provides a low low combination that it more than adequate.

For comparison:

3.93 x 5.29 x 2.28 x 4.7 = 222.78 or 1.86 mph @ 4,000 rpm with 35 inch tires

3.93 x 5.29 x 2.28 x 5.7 = 270.18 or 1.54 mph @ 4,000 rpm with 35 inch tires

Granted, it is approximately a 20% reduction, but would you really be able to tell the difference in the dual setup?

I still would like to know what the gear design is.

I'm NOT planning on changing my setup (MC09-R10, 21/23 spline, 2.28 X 4.70). I was just curious on the gear design and a comparision. Since its a lower ratio - I full expect them to be weaker. But it would also be nice to know the overall diameter difference which would tell you approximately how much more material would need to be removed from the T-case reduction housing.

If you look at the bearing loads marlins is much stronger.  Also the adaptor is cast and is not nearly as strong as aluminum.   They are using a single bearing instead of the double bearing like marlins.  TG is going to say that it is a better adaptor, but like all their products they have failed to show any stats on how their products are stronger.  Truthfully I would be afraid to run anything from them because most of their stuff is made in china.  It is a well known fact that the materials used in china are not nearly as strong as materials used in the US and in other countries.  The 4.7 gearset I would not trust.  Marlins have been out for a long time now with no problems that I am aware of.  Why would you go with anything other than a proven product?  Price means nothing, I would much rather pay more and now that I am getting a product that will hold up and take the abuse.

But remember, TG does have a lifetime guarantee :shake:  A lot of good that does 20 miles into the Dusy and you have a broken T/C adapter.

i know this is an older thread, but with all the discussion and talks of adapters, is MC looking into a C6/AOD to yota box adapter for us 302 or other blue oval people?

Additionally, while comparing parts, what differences are we looking at for some "beginner" parts such as the TG IFS elim kit or the Sky SAS kit vs the MC SAS kit?

No offense meant, I'm a MC person especially on proven technologies such as T-case adapters, but I'm wondering about future releases and other products.

Yes I have but it is still a work-in-progress.

Please read this article: http://www.marlincrawler.com/docs/mc07/index.htm

Regarding 5.7:1 gears, I would LOVE to take measurements of 2.28, 4.00, 4.70, 4.97, & 5.7 gear sets and compute the torque loading capabilities of each gearset. Obviously the higher gear ratios should be have the strongest GEAR TEETH. I have seen gear teeth fail, but remember its the input min diameter that is the true weak link of the gear set, and that is what clearly sets our 4.70 with Total-Spline technology far apart from the rest.

To be honest, I have not seen a 5.7 gear set yet. Once we get one, I would really like to compare all gears together. I remember when Marlin was trying to decide what ratio to make his gear set back in 1997, that Advanced Adapters gear cutter told him that 4.70 is as low as anyone should go, any lower than this the strength really begins to drop very quickly. I would love to verify this mathematically. This would be something I would do in my own spare time like on a Sunday sometime soon hopefully.

Regards,
BigMike
