unimog axles

Anyone ever swapped in some of those unimog protal axles.  I was looking around on the net yesterday and say some specs.  They are stronger than a dana 70 and have twice the axle clearance.  The only drawback would be running 17" to 20" rims if that's really a problem.  just wondering if anyone gots some pics or ideas abou the swap.

well i saw unimog axles on a fj-45 in offroad adventures magazine last year. july 2003 to be exact

I know there expensive but with the price of a loaded 60, I think I would rather spend the couple extra bucks for the protal and strength.  The only drawback is the weight, they weigh more than a Rockwell.

There is a set of Volvo 303 high ratio for sale on Timbercrawler for $5200 a pair.  Not a bad deal really and they are lighter than Uni's.  With the high ratio it would not be all that bad to drive I think that standard low ratio is somwhere in the 7.56 area and the high ratio is around 5.5 (?)


EDIT: the price has changed to $4200 and the ratio is 5.89, they also come with wheels.

Just found a site on the web that stocks 404 axles:
1100 for fronts
750 for rears
Not bad when you consider what you are getting.
