Weird....
« on: Jun 22, 2004, 11:32:18 PM »
Ok this weekend I drove my new truck about 110 miles nonstop in the blazing heat to a Calrocs event.  I pulled into the rv park to check in and when I went to pull it into our campsite it wouldnt start.  About 30 minutes later Bobby Long came walking into camp and told me to replace a fuse under the hood.  He said that they had the same thing happen to a 4runner a few months ago and it has not blown the fuse since.  Sure as heck that was it, but according to the fuse box cover it was the fuse for the dome light???  The efi fuse is right next to it and was not burned out at all.  Well I had a few minor issues with the truck but nothing major, (radiator cap and lost the alternator/waterpump belt).  On the drive home the truck was missing a little bit under load but otherwise ran great.  I scraped the corrosion off of the dist. cap and rotor today and the miss went away. (time for a new set!)  Anyway after I took it for a drive all was well till I tried to start it a few hours later.  Ive checked basically every thing including all the fuses, connections etc.  The only thing I have found is the fuel pump does not work and I cant find the reason for it so far.  Any help would be much appreciated of course.

I havent hard wired the pump yet but Im sure that would make it run.  I think I may have figured it out but I dont know yet.

I know that a clogged pump isnt the cause beings there is no power to the pump.  Ill have to tear it apart later to find the wiring problem.

Hmmm just to add to the ongoing saga I wiggled the ground at the rear of the chassis that grounds the tailights and fuel pump, it started.  I shut it off and checked a few other things that popped in my head and tried it again.  It wouldnt restart.  This is getting pretty stupid if I do say so myself!

Grrrr its getting to that point very quickly.  About the only thing that comes to mind is that the efi relay isnt working.  It would not suprise me to find that its fried, the headlight relay stopped working right before I started driving it, so I tood the cover off and found that the insided were completely rusted.  But Im apparantly not smart enough to get the damned relay out of the fule panel!  Which really sucks beings I have a spare one to try.

in some cases the relays may have clips on the side, a small screw driver is used to push the clip back.

From what I can see there is not a clip that holds it in on either side but I would suppose that the heat, (100+) is distorting my eyes too.  Ill go back out and check it again once it cools down to about 85 when I can at lleast stop melting!

You dont have to tell me that, it was my A$$ trying to get this dumb thing going.
I added a ground from the body to the intake, from there it goes to the battery.  The really puzzling thing about this is that when I hookup another battery to the pump it runs, but the check engine light only comes on part of the time.  (it is usually on all the time as the O2 needs to be replaced)  And now the battery light doesnt come on when I turn on hte key along with the break light which is also mia.  Im getting confused, I wish this had a carb it would still be running!

Uhhh whats an OCR??  I got it figured out and fixed now.
Heres a little prologue for ya.  When the truck ws first wrecked (94) They pulled the hood off, well under the hood is the fuse box that is broken and had the cover off of it.  We had a record snowfall this winter (20"_)  Well when I first started to do all the final wiring stuff the headlights started to freak out and be very intermitent.  Well in trying to get the relay out of the fuse box I broke its cover off and a bunch of rust fell out.  Bad relay (duh)  I should have listened to my gut the whole time on this one, it was the efi relay the whole time.  I didnt have a toyota relay but a Bosch 40a fits nicely and works just the same.  Thanks for the replys guys all your ideas kept the wheels turning in my cranium.
