5th gear noisy and vibrates?
« on: Feb 11, 2008, 12:22:56 PM »
5th gear in my truck is very noisy, and the truck shakes and vibrates.  is this a bearing problem or just something to live with?  the truck is an 85 EFI, w56 i beleive?

its probably a bearing sound.  from what i understand, toyota tranny's in general are pretty noisy.  i wouldn't worry about unless it sounds like its going to blow apart.  my tranny's been making noise for almost 8 years now.  even after i had it rebuilt, it still made noise.  if you have a lifted truck,  the angle of the driveline really magnifies the noise and vibrations too.

My w56 started making noise in 5th gear. Then 4th. Started out only at freeway speeds, then eventually all the time. After that it blew up. A good tranny should make no noise. I have one now that doesnt make a sound at all.

do you actually feel a vibration in the whole truck: your seat the floor and dash? or does it just make grind and or whinning noises only in 5th gear?  yeah a good tranny shouldn't have much noticeable noise

At first it was a noise. like a dry bearing or something. I thought the t-case was bad. Swapped it out. Nothing changed. Noise turned into a vibration. Towards the end I could feel it through my seat, felt it in my feet. At the end the noise was horrible. Even noisier while moving and pushing in clutch. 350,000 miles will do that i suppose

Eh, my tranny makes noise in 5th also, always has. Ive only owned it about 2 yrs, and I beat the piss out of it. Hasnt changed its performance one bit. I support the statement that older toyota trannys arent really quiet. I have an l series, the weaker ones supposedly, and it is original. I notice that if I get to a higher rpm in 5th, the sound deadens quite a bit. Its like that gear doesnt like low rpms at all.

i have 5 toyota's and they all have the same whining, almost like a dry bearing sound.  never had any problems with them and drive the crap out of them.  a lot of people i talk to have the same thing and never had a tranny blow.  anyways, thats my  :twocents:

I'd fix it. Whatever it is.
My tranny is silent and I don't run any shift boots.

are you sure its even the tranny?

If its only in 5th gear it could be possible that there is a certain speed you are picking up vibrations from something else

I had a loud fast ticking noise in  5th gear and it turned out to be chipped teeth on the gear. I didn't have any shift boot for awhile ether and in the summer a lot of hot air would come through like having the heater on and in the winter when i would hit a puddle water would splash through and get my leg all wet  IT SUCKED

a guy i know with an 82 pickup said that his tranny was going out becuase it was making a lot of noise in 5th gear.  Then a little while later he said that it would make it in 4th gear too.  so he baught and swapped in a different tranny and it was still there, turns out that it was his rear end, ha ha. he should have done a little diagnosis first.

5th gear is where it all starts, a small bearing whine will turn into a vibration and soon there may be no 5th gear at all. Then you will loose the whole thing, it is the transmission going out. Do you know what year trans you have? The early 5 speeds are known for this and the reason is big tires, 5th gear is the weakest gear and will be the 1st to go. Even with only 33's 5th cannot handle it, I won't even put mine into 5th except on flat level ground, my current trans already has the tell-tale whine of things to come, the best advise for now is don't use 5th at all it will extend the current life of your trans until you can get it rebuilt.

dose it also whine in 3rd gear but runs quite in 4th? if so I'd say it's bearings.  i stopped running my l52 in 5th because it was getting real rough while i rebuild another tranny. funny thing.. i shifted it into 5th a few weeks ago and it runs smooth now.,.??  must be a gen one thing.

a friend of mines changed transmission and it worked out well for him.Fifth gear noise also.On the other hand  If it lifted pretty high with dual cvases, Id put a CV in the rear driveline.....another buddy solved his problem that way also after determining that his tranny was in fact still good....

Just seems to be 5th, at any speed.  doesn't even matter how much load there is, 4 low of 2 high.  It just seems to be mostly noise, like a dry bearing, and just a slight bit of vibration.  shift to 4th or lower and no such noise.  I guess fresh fluid wouldn't hurt.  Ive got valvoline 80/90 in there, any other sugestions?

If the fluid comes out with a lot of metal, you'll be certain it's time for a rebuild................

Yeah, what RockSurfer said...

5th gear is basically for coasting or cruise control on flat highways.  Feel no fear at dropping it into 4th on the highway if you're gong up a hill. 3500-4000prm won't possibly hurt these engines, even for extended periods of time. Otherwise you'll eventually wear the 5th gear out.  Doubly so if you're running big tires and other mods that increase drivetrain friction.

As for dealing with it, I would of course change the oil - it may be as simple as burnt or old oil.  If the noise bothers you, of course run it in 4th on the highway.  That's one advantage of manual transmissions - if one gear is going bad not using it tends to keep it  from getting worse for quite a while.

And, no, don't believe that nonsense about changing gear oil making it worse - if changing the oil makes it die, it was already damaged.

P.S. IME, changing gear oil every year or two of hard driving is a good idea.  The amount of dust and grime that it soaks up is astounding.

Mine makes noise in 5th and 3rd.

I plan to run it till it blows.  Then get one from a junkyard

mine whines like a turbine in 3rd gear.. wonder if winding it up to 6000 rpm in 3rd a few to many times is why it dose that now? anyway the rumble in 5th has gone.. must of chrewed up what ever it was.

Mine whined when i let off the gas.  Turned out the previous owner ran it low on oil and pitted all the gears so they needed to be replaced.  I say fix the thing but thats just my :twocents:

yeah it's a good idea to check the level. i had one gearbox that decided to transfer all it's lube back into the transfercase.  don't ask me why. i checked em once and they were both right, then for what ever reason it decided to get strange.
