chevy rear springs
« on: Jun 20, 2004, 06:06:37 PM »
I hear everyone talk about the chevy rear springs.  Any info would be greatly help.
How much lift is possible?  Do you use chevy shackles?

Before you read this, my opinion is that I dont like them. I've never used them b4, so my decision is from talking to people who have used them in the past and changed.

They are very long.. If you plan on bobbing your bed you might not be able to.. Also the rear shackles will hang very far out the back.

I was told that you should try to find the 2WD chevy springs. They were spring under so they have more arc = more lift.

I have a bobbed bed right now that is really butchered.  The guy I bought it from really didn't know what he was doing, there is about a 1 inch gap in the be and a pound of bondo the outside.  I read that you guys are going to be selling springs soon.  Any feedback on them yet?

You dont' get much lift out of the chevies so most set up s require about a 3 in block to match the front. And you use a long shackle . So axle wrap could be a problem

i ran them on a 4runner that was bobbed a foot with a pickup tailgate.  they work pretty darn good, but unfortunately stick out under the frame to get hung up on rocks.  the rear wasnt a prob so much as it just drug along the spring and fell off the rock...

if i wasnt linked up in the rear, id run chevies. ive used mazdas, allpros and chevies previously.

I cut 17" off my truck and 5" off end of the frame and am using Chevy's (2WD), shackles stick out a little but not bad. First run on this truck was Fordyce this last Memorial day, didnt hang up on them at all. I like 'em

chevys work well but dont give much lift.
i have a 2 in add a leaf in mine to level them with the front. (dont like blocks)
i have hung up my front hanger a couple of times, but not enough to worry me.
the other option that i think i would use now is f-150 springs.
they are not as long and flex really well.

No blocks on mine, when i fabbed my new perches I incorperated an extra 1" height into the perch, and boxed the ends. I'm also using the front half of the overload. Matches front really well.

Is a block no longer a block when its welded to the axle housing? I have not run chevy leafs but it seems like every time Im on the rubicon there is sombody trying to fix a broken main leaf. Are they toyota leafs or chevy leafs?

My perches are cut out of 2.5"x 2.5"x 1/4" box tube so they're one piece, basically a taller spring perch, again no blocks. And yes Chevy springs.

Seriously doubt broken springs would be Chevy's, they are much larger than any Toy springs.  Axle wrap has not been an issue w/chevy's because of their size.  When I put mine on I created a front perch that is pie shaped so that any rocks that would get hung up on the perch glide up a ramp instead.  With long travel shocks I am currently getting about 24" of rear wheel travel with no axle wrap.  I use the Chevy shackle connected to a heavy duty after market shackle (can't think of the brand right now) connected to the frame.

blocks and taller perches both increace axle wrap but if the chevy leafs can handle it than it sounds like a good set up.
when I made the perches for my sprung over fj40 I also made them taller, still using stock springs the wrapage was bad.
i have since made a top trus for the housing and mounted one link from the trus forward to the cross mamber , wrap-be-gone

I run Chevies out back, Made wedged hangers that were a little taller. Stock Chevy shackle goes to frame. Then a 7 inch shackle to the spring. No blocks. And the rear matches the front almost perfectly. I put my rears up front with an estemated 5 inch lift..
Build them. Don't buy them

THAT IS SWEET! and  now that I see those leafs they are way thick!
How is the front of that thing mounted? If that takes care of axle wrap than do you still need the
over load leafs?

I have a bobbed swb and chevies.  They stick out a little, but no big deal.  They are rock anchors, kinda.  I love them, only three inches of lift, but I don't wanna go much higher.  I like keeping my cg low and i like chopped up fender wells.
