best driveshaft joints to buy?
« on: Jan 28, 2008, 08:42:31 PM »
I already know the stuff at autozone and Oreilly's is junk.  Carquest doesn't carry spicer anymore, and the Naepco joints they carry now also suck.  I have tried the brute force (junk)  so what else is there?  Should I just buy a u joint from the toyota dealer?  I know hardcore samurai guys buy their joints at the dealer.....what's your experience?  I will be VERY hard on them so don't mind the extra money on this item.....and I am running stock toyota shafts btw.

Precision U-joints.  USA made...good :pokinit:. 387, BTW.  Or a 285 if you want a tempered steel joint.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I will visit my local dealer in the a.m.  I sure do like the yota design on the driveshafts, with no straps or U bolts to mess with.

Here's a dumb question, so forgive my ignorance... :hammer:

If I headed down to the dealership, would I need to know the year my driveshaft, or will a single joint work for most? Are the joints in the CV the same?

If someone has a toyota part number of the common u-joints, that probably be very helpful.

It appears that the 83 and prior trucks will use 04371-35070 u-joints and the Post 84 trucks/4runners use an 04371-60070. These could very well be the same joint but i don't stock the one for the earlier joint so it's hard to say.....

Went to the dealer today and had a heart attack!!!!!    70 bux for the joint!  Went to carquest and got a neapco for now.  Saw another dealer advertise the stockers for 20 bux a piece and some ugraded ones for 39.99.  Guess I'll do that before I spend 70 dollars on a stocker locally, or maybe just go to the junkyard and get the female part of the slip yoke....with a stock joint in it.

Dosent bobby long offer some good ujoints? I think they are machined for full circle clips, and mabye some other mods. I don't know if they offer them for toyotas or notm but here is a link. http://www.toyotasuperaxles.com/

They are a little pricey at 150 ea though.

Marlin sells u-joints that work great if you give them a call.  The price is reasonable and I believe they might be OEM.  They don't seem to break.

I actually just broke a marlin joint and it took the flange with it.  I cant say it was the joint or something else.

They might be worth it if they don't break.  There is nothing worse than a broken U-Joint.

Toyota u joints are equivalent to a 1450 Spicer u joint in strength. I believe it's the same as a one and a quarter ton u joint.

Thanks for clearing that up. I saw on his site that they were for dana axles, but he may offer stuff thats not on his site. If he dosent offer them, with enough interest he might. If bobby make em they must be strong!

Napa use to sell good quality GMB Japanese u-joints, that's as close to OEM with a better price your gonna get.  The guy at napa the other day told me they switched to precision gear u-joints.

I have to agree with the broken timing chain over a u-joint though, and on the rubicon...YIKES!

Jessie at High Angle Driveline says that OEM (from the dealer) are equal in strength to at least a one-ton joint or better. That is where my money goes.

agreed...... I have OEM in my high angle driveline as well....

I am curious about the Precision Gear joints. I would never run anything but Precision gear ring and pinions in my diffs but i didnt know they made joints. Anyone know anything else about these?

My 89 has 255,xxx miles on it and still has the original factory joints in it.   I'd say thats a good enough test for me.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.
