just my luck
« on: Jun 16, 2004, 08:27:54 PM »
i went wheeling today with prism and 81toy4x and we had a blast. prism was showing us how the older guys do it and it was awesome. so then we were on the last trail of the day and it was kickass, yet again thanks to prism for that sweet trail. anyway nick(81toy4x) was in path the i wanted to take and wasn't gonna be moving antime soon because he didnt want his truck to get dominated by a tree. so prism was like take this route and i went for it. i go through the puddle and i must have hit a log or something and right when i did, there was a funky sound. a clanking sound i would call it. and it only makes the sound when the hubs are lock, doesnt matter if its in 4wd or 2wd. the sound is also coming from the front end. so my question is does anyone have an idea of what this sound is coming from. i know i didnt give a good description but thats all i can give right now, any help would be appreciated. im gonna get it on the lift tomarrow at school to c if i can figure anything out, but u guys always seem to have a good idea as well.

Its probobly either the ring & pinion or the spiders.  Those parts seem to scatter easily.

The cv's are really easy to kill too.  Just try the old shake and twist method.  If you feel more than 1/8" movemont in any direction then its toast.

lock the hubs and put the t-case in 2wheel.  See what happens when you try and turn the driveline.  Then unlock one hub at a time and spin the driveline.  See what happens, that will tell you what the issue is and where its at pretty quickly.

I would think it could be something in the hubs if it does it in 2wd also.  I am just thinking though and that's not good at times.  Do you have a front locker?

Remove your rear driveline, put the front up on jack stands, pull your e-brake, fire it up, and let it idle in 4WD high 1st gear or so with both hubs locked.

You could shift it into Low and use first gear, and then while it is idling in 1st, use your hands and slowly stop on of the tires. The other will spin twice as fast, but doing this will stop the axle and you can see if the noise goes away. Do the same to the other side also. If the noise is still there both times, then its in your diff-

sound to me that it is the ring or pinion. you could try to lock the hubs and move the wheel while moving if the sound is always the same it should be the ring or pinion.

ok well i got it on the lift today and you wouldn't believe it. it was the cover on the front driveshaft, the cpver that covers the u-joint. it had got pinched up and made that annoying noise. so its fixed and there are no worries. thnaks for all your inputs.
