Do I need a new/rebuild transmission? A340h
« on: Jan 24, 2008, 06:01:49 PM »
First you need to know the facts, about a year ago I let a friend drain the oil in my 4runner (bad idea) for me while I changed the oil in my car.  It seemed simple enough, I showed him what pan to drain, he ended up draining the transmission pan.  I added 5quarts to an already full engine, and proceeded to drive it around the block.  Needless to say the trans started slipping and the truck was blowing smoke from the exhaust, right away I realized what he'd done so I went back home and parked it.  I drained the motor oil again, and bought trans fluid and filled her up.  Ever since the trans didn't seem to have the same pep and snap it used to, it seemed to be ok for a while but seems to be getting worse and worse.  The shifts are barely felt and it almost feels like I have to almost floor it to get it to move or downshift while already moving.  My question is, what could have been damaged?  Obviously the whole trans could've been damaged, but will it require a complete rebuild or is there a partial rebuild I can do without having to spend $2,500.00?  Sorry for the long post, and trust me I don't let that guy near any of my cars anymore.

Edit:  It's an 1988 4runner V6 with the a340h trans.

i will  forward this  to a friend from jersey,  but first  i would  drop the  pan on the trans  and change the filter,  sounds like its clogged

which would be from clutch material  from  driving it  with no fluid in it,  btw  :slap:  your friend for me

its quite simple to rebuild an auto. all you need is the right tools and a good brain to remember how it all goes back together, neither of them do i have.

just dont go to a trans rebuild chain store, they all suck but the one i went to. ill check around.
you think nobody cares about you? try missing a couple of car payments.

Sorry, I haven't been on here in a while.  Actually I did have it serviced, they mentioned something about the chains in the transfer case possibly having been stretched a bit.  Otherwise it seems to be better.  I'm still looking for a good toyota 4x4 offroad specialist in my area if anyone knows someone.
