« on: Jan 24, 2008, 03:03:52 PM »
i am on my THIRD IFS FRONT AXLE....... and just thios laast weekend i was playin on some trails and climbin some dunes and i came off the top of the dune, didnt even catch any air ( maybe a foot or so) and then went to turn around and clunk clunk clunk clunk..... im like, hmmmmm damn front end!!! i get out to look, the bracket that holds the back of the third on is totally broken off the frame, the cv is toast on the passengers side, and the mount on the drivers side of the axle is ALMOST ripped all the way off the frame..... anyone ever done that before??? I could throw a new cv on and weld the brakets up but its like......... maybe GOD wants me to have a SA in the front of my 92....... do i even attempt to fix it or say flopp it and wait to just do my SAS?????????? i lose my license on the 28th of feb. due to my dui and it is suspended for three months so..... just wanting a little input!!!!!

straight axle it, only have to do it one time, not three. if you have three months you can atleast take your time and do a clean SAS, dont have to worry about rushing it.

Too old, to much to repair, too much busted and half busted OEM crap.

Sounds like a perfect time to SAS it and make the gremlins starve for a while.

Nothing will help when you jump a truck, soon there will be other issues like the frame to cab mounts busting through the bottom of the cab. I've run IFS and for the most part not jumped it just for kicks and have yet to break my frontend. I almost have 200,000 miles on my current rig and had another 86 with about 150,000 and my 4Runner had 250,000 on it. That is 600,000 miles total and here is my frontend carnage and Regular maintenance list, yes I can remember it all since it hasn't been much...

1 broken inner axle
1 broken Rancho upper A-arm
1 broken Rancho 9000 shock
1 upper A-arm rebuild

That it, sure I don't constantly hammer my trucks but I have as required and I have taken my IFS trucks places people say you shouldn't. The IFS front is much weaker than the straight axle no doubt but if you take care of one it will serve you well, if you intend on beating the snot out of one it will let you down..... but so will a straight axle.

if you love to launch ur rig in the air, go with "total caos" long travel system ,it yeilds somthing like 14" of front wheel travel from your IFS(dont quote me on that)..."SAS" is the way to go for me, you could still go dune jumping and go rock crawling in the same day :twocents:

Yeh ya think, a good spotter and stop wheeling alone.here in juneau there isnt a whole lot of true wheelers(or trails) and more mall crawlers then anything...we pretty much go illegal or put the rig on the ferry and skip town for a weekend

actually im not really into jumping, i love to crawl..... the truck was hit on the drivers front end and bent a bunch brackets.... but the first front end blew the pinion gear right threw the side of the housing, the second took about 6 teeth off of the ring gear and the third is broken bracketry and passengers cv..... i am very hard on it, i have some hill climbs that werent exactly trails that my cousin and i blazed and you have to hit it in 4th low or else you will not make it and catching air just has to happen there!!! i already have a trussed/armored/85 front end and a few thirds laying around! and two extra TC's......... do you see where i am going with this???? if i liked jumping id do the total choas, i looked into it not bad for IFS but i LOVE ROCKS!!!! i got that damn dui though so money is an issue...... what all should i do first??
here's what i thought would be good to do first:
-marlin 5 inch kit
-4cyl-aussie locker in the front/ 4.88's
-(i have 4.10's but with 35's not so nice.....)
-stock birfs
-aisin lockouts
-long travel front driveline

for now that should get the job done to make it streetable and wheelable but heres what i really want
-ARB's front and rear
-superlongs/chromo hub gears
-hydro assist
-dual cases 2.28 up front 4.7/twinstick in back
-37's or 38's

Sounds like a solid plan. Use your time without a license to gather all your parts and build your truck right. no point in wasting any more money on IFS.

here is what i already have:
-lockouts from an fj40
-knuckle rebuild kit with marlins HD seals
-one open 4cyl diff with 4.88's
-1 forward shift case and 1 top shift case(plus the forward shift already in my truck)
-extra w56 transmission
-Two seats out of an 84 that have no rips(unbelievable!!)
-extra IFS rear with 4.10's

SO.. that means i still need.......
-Marlin 5 inch SAS kit + rear lift= $2050
-4.88 Yukon master set up=$300 or so
-aussie locker= $275 maybe i should just get two?
-front driveline=$200 or so
-MC07 R10=$370
-marlin twinstick=$200
-Fab up custom crossmember= not much
-37 inch BFG Krawlers on steel= CREDIT
well that adds up to approximately.......$3395 and does not include crossmember or tires.... might get some used ones for now and just run 35's....but i'll decide when the time comes!!
In conclusion i need to get my ass into gear and work HELLA hours, gonna get 2 jobs to catch up on bills and get te Red Rocker goin..... i am very eager to get my 92 SAS'ed and get on some REAL TRAILS...... i'll keep everyone updated, i appreciate the motivation!! Happy Krawlin

yes but i like rocks and the IFS doesnt.... i've been wheelin toyota's since i was 15 and this last summer i bought my first 2nd gen and i feel in love with the amount of travel i have..... ifs has served me very well, i mean i took my 92 places my buddies 84 yota(open diffs) wouldnt dream of going.... when you have to use a heavy foot i guess that what it takes!!!!! then one day SNAP!!!!!!! so its just far past due for what i like to do!!!

sas, youll love it. sounds like you got your :pokinit: in order minus the dui... with 3 months of down time, you could have the cleanest SAS known to man. do it slow, take your time. reinforce everything. get your rig all nice and build, after 3 months you have the strongest DD SAS known to man

You know if you have a welder you can make a square front drive shaft on the cheap for the cost of steel and the price of a solid axle stock front shaft. Or have a shop make it. my friend made one out of my stock 85 for me at his shop for $60. Its cheaper than 200 bucks and stronger since there are no splines. ive been running a square front for over a year and if done right they wont make hardly any noise.

This is the only pic i have of mine but you get the idea

hell yeah!!  the dui was just a wake up call, now i've got major motivation...... i really wish i could drop the HP front diff with ARB and rear V6 with ARB in at that time but thats ALOT of money!!!! we will stick to lunchbox lockers for now!!!!
i am also going to build an ANTI WRAP bar for the rear while im at it!!!!! and my cousins have a shop where i can keep it with a master miller welder setup and a plasma torch and tube benders.......and metal and i am READY! time to Git Er Done!!

i thought about the square front.... when i dualed my cases on the 84 i had some extra dual cv's and rear drivelines so i took them to Wenatchee Driveline and the guy shortend the rear and lengthened(really shortened a rear) the front for $100..... i thought that was a damn good deal!!!i have another DL that i might just buy a long travel spline for it! i like the regular DL's better than the square for some damn reason, but thanks for the advise!!!!
