Transmission breather?
« on: Jun 13, 2004, 10:26:02 PM »
Does the auto tranny on the 2nd gen 4runners ( I think its the A340H) have a breather?  I found and extended the transfer case one, but can't find anything for the tranny itself.

I cant guarantee it but I pulled a auto out of a 85 a few weeks ago and the breather was coming out of the top front of the trans.  It had a breather that would basically rest on the back of the head on a re.

The A340H has a breather tube at the top of the tranny behind the bell housing.

Ok.  So this breather is just like all the other ones with the little one way valve thing, right?  No hose?  I hear some jeep trannies are just open to the air.  A guy in my club sucked in a lot of mud to his wrangler tranny.

It has a breather that is on the end of a hose.  On the 85 the hose was about 8" long

Do a complete flush (about 15 qts) and start saving up for a new tranny.  At that point it might last a week or it might last for another 10 years.  It depends on how much damage was done and you can only tell if you take apart the tranny.

Edit:  of course I'm posting this on a transmission guru's forum and I'm no expert, so... :twocents:
