I am saving my money for crawler gears and have a question for those of you with similar rigs.  I run 5.29 R&P w/35" BFG MT's and have the w-56 tranny in my 85 4Runner.  I am only a short distance from the Rubicon and other fun rock crawling places.  Right now I burn my clutch playing on the boulders.  For those of you that have made the jump to Marlin's t-case sets do you still have to slip the clutch?  Do you wish you had lower gears still?  I know there is a ton of variables here with tires size, r&p's, tranny combo's, which Marlin set you run etc. so if/when you reply you could let me know what your specs are I would appreciatte it so I can factor that into the equation.  Thanks for any feedback

ShawnB here on the board has a 85 truck with basically the same setup, gears, tires etc.  He used to destroy his clutch but then we put in a doubler and his clutch is much happier with him now.

So that's two t-cases w/ 2.28 gears?

yup I would do duals over single with 4.7's anyday just because they are more usefull overall.  With 4.7's you are limited to just that as a low range, but on a trail with lots of mud thas too low of a low.  Well on a dual setup you have your normal lowrange for mud and general trail running then youhave your double low for the tricky stuff.

I am runnin 5.29's with 36's and stock duals, they are great. I have never had to slip my clutch on the rubicon. As a matter of fact I will turn my rig off and wait for someone and then start it in gear with now problem at all. I drive a 84 carb runner. I find that the most used gear for me when it comes to some good climbing is bolth cases in low and second gear with a little gas  works great

well, with a 4.7 case you could put it in 2nd or 3rd gear if you want your stock range back.  i'm thinking about going with a single case because i hear duals cuts your gas milage down pretty bad in most cases...i don't want to drop below 20!

I have 4.7 tc geats and 4.10 axle gears. I still slip my clutch, althrough it isnt anywhere as bad as before. I honestly think I woudl slip is just as much with lower gearing too. I have a tendency to get impatent over obsticles.

i'v got dule with 4.70 love it the o/l has just dule see love it so how x do you think you are

I have 5.29's 35's and dual cases.  The only time i use my clutch is to stop and then start again with the engine already running.  You can start it with it in gear and you don't have to use the clutch.  Plus dual cases are lower in gearing then crawler gears.  You would have to get a 5.2 crawler gear to equal a dual case and they don't make those.

With dual t-cases how much did you end up changing frt & rear driveshaft lengths?  And I'm guessing that would be lengthen frt and shorten rear?

Save a little longer and get the duals. It is well worth it. You will be amazed. 8)

vanilla duals would actually be cheaper for me to do, as i already have a spare case sitting around

Sounds like duals to me
