hey guys or gals
what tires  are the best tires for wheeling

what kind of wheeling? Any street driving?

46&2

That all depends on what you are going to be using them for. "Wheeling" is a broad term. What terrain do you encounter the most? Do you see a lot of street miles? Does tread life matter to you (or are you made of money :D)?

I have experience with Goodyear MTRs, Toyo Mud terrains, BFG all terrains, BFG mud terrains, Cooper discoverer mud terrains, interco LTBs and superswamper iroks. They are all great tires but we really have to know what your NEEDS are before we can judge what tire is best suited for you.

Out of the tires I listed:

Goodyear MTR: Excellent all around tire. Great in rocks, mud, snow, sand. Good tread life on and off the street, thick sidewall, quiet on the road.

Toyo M/Ts: A lot like MTRs, louder on the street though, really thick though

BFG A/Ts: Decent traction in all terrains but leaves a lot to be desired off pavement. Great for DDs that see little trail time but they suck once you get into nasty mud or snow.

BFG M/Ts: One of my favorite tires, I would buy another set for sure. Kick ass in the mud and snow and on the rocks. Louder on the street but they still have good tread life.

Coopers: Good all around tire, not as great as the BFG mudders. Good tread life, not too loud on the street but offer much better traction in mud/snow/rocks than the BFG AT.

LTBS: awesome in the snow and mud, good on the rocks. Loud as hell on the road, crappy tread life if driven on the street a lot.

SS Iroks: Awesome in all types of offroad situations,  loud on the road pretty good tread life but not as good as an MTR or BFG mud.

Anyway let us know what you plan to do with these tires besides "Wheel" and that will help you figure out what tires will work best for you.

on a side note, quick question 46&2; what kind of tread life can be expected from the LTBs? I drive a total of maybe 5000 miles a year, and I wonder if these tires will last me a couple years. (looking st the 34x10.50r15s)

Ehhh...I dunno if thats a good choice. They will probably last you a year and half to 2 years maybe. they are really soft and wear quickly on the street. I wouldnt expect more than that though. They are good tires...IMO though they are better left to trailer queens or trucks that dont see DD requirements.

Well dang. I thought they were a perfect size to fit with a OME lift on stock rims. They are pretty cheap though. I am guessing it is probably the same story for some 32x10.50r15 or 33x10.50r15 radial TSLs. I thought about putting the 32x10.50r15s on without a lift, but if they wear just as bad, then they are out as well. Maybe some 32x11.50r15 SSRs? They probably wear pretty fast as well. Sorry for the thread jack, but i just had to ask the question really fast.

I dunno the trend with a lot of Interco tires is that they are so soft they wear really fast on the street. they look sick and perform excellent but street life leaves a lot to be desired. if you are looking for some good 33s bfg muds and mtrs are both realativly affordable and last forever. i forgot that i have run wildcats before too those are cheap mud tires that last a long time and come in a lot of different sizes. sorry to dissapoint I liked the Interco tires but I like to get the most bang for my buck and that tends to leave me with BFGs, Goodyears or Wildcats. Toyos are awesome but cost a pretty penny

what about interco's new tire, the TrXus Mud Terrain. Any news on these? Again, thanks for the info.

Dunno they look sick but I have no experience with them. They look like they are more geared towards the DD crowd though. Worth a shot, i would like to try them myself

Right now my truck is running Cooper Discoverer STT mudders.
These tires provide good traction in all conditions, are quiet and wear super long.
The rubber is pretty soft so they flex and grip well.
Sidebiters dig in and protect the side wall.
I did get slow leak once when a sharp stick jammed into the space b/t the tread.
Chose the Coops over bfg's cause of the siping on the tread blocks of the STT"S.
However, I have always liked BFG's better.

I had 33.12.50 Wild country RVT's before but they're nothing like the Coops.

If I had enough lift I'd go with the new BFG KM2. they seem to be an awesome tire.
     Just my :twocents:  good luck....

Maybe I will try them out when the time comes. Only problem is I don't have aftermarket rims, nor can I afford them, so I have to buy stuff that will fit properly on the stock 15x7s. I have the opportunity to buy some nameless aftermarket aluminum 15x10 rims for $150 bucks. Is that a good deal? They are on an old 1st gen sitting in the junkyard with some minor oxidation on them. I do not know the brand, nor do i know if they are straight, but if they are worth it, i might go buy them.

If that is so, then I wouldn't mind trying out the interco LTBs. As long as it is mostly a trail vehicle, like fortysixandtwo said, they should work all right, and like I said, they are cheap. I have not heard any real negative feedback about them besides they wear really fast on the street.

Yeah I wanted to get some more LTBS because of the price but I commute 100 miles round trip, 2-4 times a week so I need tires that will hold up to that kind of street mileage

I don't really need beadlocks right now, as this is a mainly street driven rig, and the tires really need to be balanced fairly well because i travel on the interstate between the city and the ranch a lot during summer (1.5 hr one way). Plus I am up in Wyoming, and shipping would probably suck. But I will check into it. Thanks for the info though.

I put about 100 easy miles a week on my truck in the city during fall/winter/spring, but come summer time, i can put 200 on the truck a day depending upon what I am doing. I have had the Bridgestone Dueler M/Ts on the truck all this year, and they seem to be wearing slowly. They just are not exactly what I was looking for. I need better ice performance, which is where that heavily siped (for a mud tire) interco would work well, but i still need good mud performance, which the new interco would also provide. The bridgestone's tread has chunked off a little bit, but other than that it isn't too bad of a tire. I got them for $56 a piece with lifetime roadhazard warranty on them in the 30x9.5r15 size, so I can't complain too much.

I just got my boggers 35x14.5 r15's they are the best off road tire I've ever run. Great in mud, great on rocks, not bad in sand or dirt and their not as loud as every body says they are on the road + there tough as hell. only thing is if your forward progretion stops you have to get off the throtel fast or you will dig your ace to china

Depends on the "wheelin' "...

I really like the SXs for the wheelin' I do around southern Utah.  There is enough sharp lava here that you need something real tough but sticky enough to do the slickrock.

x's 2 on the sx's.They wouldnt be my first choice if i drove my truck on the road everyday. They dont balance well, and they get flat spots if they sit too long. Once they warm up they do alright on road, but i didnt build my truck for on road. OFFROAD I WILL ACCEPT NOTHING LESS. Hands down the toughest tire ive ever wheeled.

x3.....I drove them for daily driver for a while and they did well. I did use dynabeads to help balance them. And yes they do get flat spots (especially in cold weather) but they go away after 5 minutes
