How to tell 3rd housings apart?
« on: Dec 15, 2007, 04:54:51 PM »
Does anyone know of a thread or site that explains/ shows the differences in the 3rd housings for toy axles? interested in the differences that can be seen for identification without having to open the housings. 8", 7.5", 4cyl, v6, and hi-pinion.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

2wd will have spring perches under and 5 lug, 7.5 will be in an ifs front end. If it's in a solid axle front end it's an 8". Most 6 lug rears are going to be 8" unless it's out of a tacoma then it might be an 8.4? or something like that. Landcruiser diffs look totally differant than mini truck diffs except for the high pinion which looks more like an upside down mini housing and it's an 8".

Thanks  for the help.   It looks like all of the housings I have are 4cyl. Now, one more item. Is the difference in 7.5" and 8" thirds more than the carrier and r&p?  I also have a 2wd 3rd gen rear axle and need to know if the housing can be used with the 8" third.
