noise in gas tank and level off

every time i stop and park my truck theres a knocking noise coming from the gas tank and my fuel level now shows  1/4 low when its completely filled   its and 84  carbed truck any ideas

Sounds like you have a problem with the float assembly for the fuel sender in the tank. You need to drop the tank and pull the fuel pump/sender out of the tank and check. The knocking noise is the float banging on the side/bottom of the tank more then likely.
