help with ifs cv axle

i have a 88 xcab with a bad driverside cv. what would the easiest way to remove and install. an what tools needed. any help would be welcomed

I bet if you go buy a Chiltons it will tell you how to change it along with many other things. :therethere:

 ive got a ripped up boot on my 4runner.  :headscratch: guess i'd better fix it. i'll look at my factory manual tonight and let you know what i find out. in the meantime maby someone who's done it well come out with some sage advice. :bowdown:  on the easy way to get it done. whats wrong your cv?

The outer shaft is easy to remove, just remove the 6 bolts attaching the inner shaft to the outer, remove the hub, remove the snap ring on the end of the outer shaft, slide the shaft out between the lower A-arm and the frame/A-arm mount.

The inner is also fairly easy, you will need a slide hammer or a piece of wood and a regular hammer. Either attach the slide hammer to the end of the shaft and knock it out that way or place the small board on the inside of the shaft and hammer it out that way. There is a small ring on the inside of the shaft make sure it comes out with the shaft or fish it out after, just make sure you get it all, it completly incircles the shaft. If you don't get all of it out you'll be pulling it back out again later and replacing the whole 3rd member.

This can actually be done with the vehicle sitting on the ground except to slide the outer axle out.

get those 6 bolts out befor you take the lockout  hub off,  i  did one  after removeing the drive shaft and hubs  and i learnewd  a big lesson :headshake:

yes the cv. the axle is spinning in cv. ok the 6 bolts are the ones holding the axle to 3rd member

easy.....take a grinder and cut off said broken parts and bracketry...install solid axle

That's why I started out by saying to remove the 6 bolts, and then pull the hub.  :qtip:

85 Toyota 4Runner, solid axle, 22Re, original paint and graphics and not a straight panel to be found!
