How would you go about....
« on: Nov 17, 2007, 03:53:43 PM »
taking the crank bolt off the pully when its stripped? And the whole starter trick broke a ratchet and a socket so that wasnt getting me very far.

Im pissed. Went to do the front main seal and tried to get the bolt off the pully and thought itd take llike a half hr at most and ended up working an hr and a half trying to get that damn bolt off and it didnt do a damn thing...

Head is stripped...

I wannt to do that but the only problem is that if its breaking my ratchets, will it even come off? Im gettin pretty upset.

It looks like some d-bag put silicone on the threads and thats why its not doin a damn thing when i try to get it off

get one of those long ratchets about 2feet long that flip 180* instead of ratcheting.
don't know the right term for it, i hope it makes sense.

Wouldn't think silicone on the threads would make it that hard to remove...  Red Loctite, maybe  :dunno:

But if you are breaking tools, maybe better tools are in order? Not trying to be a smart  :moon:, ...  Most of my tools are Craftsman (bought my original set 40 years ago), and breakage has not been a problem. I've used cheater pipes on the ratchets quite a few times -- gives you a lot more leverage.

Good luck, hope you get it off!

I think you're talking about a breaker bar.

i had the same problem  with the one on my celica Chris,  somebody  used red loctite  if  its busted  good tools

get a torch  or  weld a big nut on there  the  heat from welding the nut on will break  the loctite  loose

You could do all that welding mess, or you can take a grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut the washer part off the outside of the bolt. This will relive the pressure on it. Then buy a new bolt.

um NO  if red loctite was used  ONLY  heat  and LOTS of it  will  make it come loose

and  i dont know how  you would get a grinder up in there  to  cut  the "washer" part off anyway,  the motor is still in his truck

He never said red locktite was used. He said silicone. I had one That kept braking sockets. I called an old man to ask what to do. We unbolted the front part of  the pully. Cut the outside off of the bolt. Then it came off by hand.

I have no idea what it is on there to tell you the truth. There is silicon on the outside of the washer point...

Its ridiculous how stuck it is on there.

It was a pos ratchet that broke and a craftsman socket. yes i was using a cheater bar with a 1x1 sq tube on it

If it's not too boogered up yet you might wanna use a six point impact socket on it with your ratchet or breaker bar. Oh, be sure to use at least 1/2 in dr. and if it's that stuck maybe 3/4 dr will be better.  It should pop loose with a bump of the starter and maybe some heat as well.  Good luck with that!  :crossed:  :beerchug:

Beat a smaller junker socket on it and hit it with an impact, if you can get one in there.  Don't know why somebody would put anything on there, they torque to like 116ft lbs.

a lil propane torch would be a good heat source to heat up the substance holding that nut on if the welding doesnt do the trick, but i dont see how it couldnt
