Well, first I'm posting this separate from my build-up, so if somebody needs to see just what is needed, and not go through all my build-up to get the info needed!  I spent many hours searching for tech on how to do this swap, many have done this the cheap way and expensive way!  I didn't have the $$ to buy a parts/donor rig and then deal with selling off what was left.  I figured I buy the parts as I needed them.  As most of my time was spent researching and finding the stuff that was needed.

I bought a 87 p/u with a turbo motor that was not running!  I felt that after some research on turbo motors, the CT-20 turbo in the p/u & 4runners were of a weak design and very expensive to get rebuilt!  I didn't want more things to worry about and cost more $$ to fix later, or having to modify the exhaust and everything to lubricate and cool a CT-26, which was the more reliable and better built turbo from Toyota.  I just wanted the 22RE reliability.  Yeah, I got some slack for not wanting to stay with the turbo, but I wanted to simplify things, and 143 hp wasn't what I was looking for, and with gas prices the way they are!

So, here is the list of things needed and things that can be reused!

Things needed!
~ 22re motor (the turbo has lower compression, different style of head, pistons, oil passage)
~ the exhaust, manifold and the downtubes, you will need a single downtube, not the double, won't fit 4wd
~ the top half of the air filter box, the half that has the AFM sensor for 22re
~ the air tubing from AFM to TPS intake
~ injectors for 22re (22re runs 205cc flow and the turbo run 295cc)
~ ecm for 22re (turbo one wont work)
~ metal pipe that goes between the water pump, and the heater hose return, runs under the exhaust
~ new radiator hose that goes from the water pump to the bypass pipe (turbo model has a heater return line in the bend)
~ PCV valve (turbo doesn't use one)
~ various sizes of hoses for vacuum and PCV and crankcase vent hose, it's just good insurance to replace all the hoses since most warrantied motors it's required!
~

Things re-used!
~ the TPS, throttle valve and upper and lower intake
~ the wiring harness (just check to make sure all the wires are working, especially if the truck was not running when you bought it, my coil wires that ran over the exhaust was fried)
~ the coolant bypass pipe that goes around the alternator
~ EGR valve (only difference between re and rte is that egr closes when turbo goes into boost)
~ flywheel, it's a bigger (9/16" larger than 22re) and heavier, better for lugging speeds to keep motor going and more clamping force for the clutch
~ radiator, turbo is 3 core, BUT will have to clamp off coolant return line from turbo
~ can reuse all, but one hose (listed above), but it is good insurance to replace them all, it's probably been awhile since they were
~

Recommend!

~ Getting the injectors and the cold start injector cleaned and flow tested.  Mine were done by http://www.witchhunter.com/  but there are other good places too!  Just ask!  Mine flowed 12.1% before and after they were all flowing within 0.8% of each other!  Plus got all new filters, gaskets, and grommets for under $100.
~ Getting a good Factory Service Manual (FSM) or if you like cheaper Haynes or Chiltons, for torque specs
~ getting the fuel pump psi tested
~ rerouting the coils wires that goes from the efi harness to the coil, mine ran over the exhaust and fired, so I lengthened them to run up along the firewall to the coil
~ I picked up a spare efi intake, wire harness, and extra ecm's (due to age of the rigs some wires eventually corrode or short out and you will need spare wires and plugs, the ecm also, and alot of wheelers carry spares, again due to age the probability of them going bad or are bad at the time of purchase (used) is very possible.

I'm probably missing something, but if I remember I'll take care of it!

Here is what the old engine compartment looked like:

And after the swap:

I thought it was blowed up?  What all is wrong with it?

It wouldn't start because the the wires going to the coil/igniter were fried.  I tried to start it before swapping out motors, but it would hit on one or two of the cylinders, but not start!  I found out about the wires after I took out the motor.  Besides that, the only thing I know for sure about the motor is, it definitely needs front and rear main seals replaced.  It has a new head on it.  They said it was running good when they parked it, and it used a quart of oil a day, because it was leaking out the rear main seal!  The reason it was parked was they bought an extra cab.
