Mud Flaps
« on: May 26, 2004, 06:00:57 PM »
I picked up a set of trucker mud flaps from Napa, similar to the ones on Marlins truck because I want to get rid of the stock ones.  And I want some ideas on how to mount them.  I was thinking about welding a piece of 2" square tubing perpendicular to the frame then bolting the flaps to a piece of 2" square tubing, to be able to slide into the piece welded to the frame for a removable style mounting system similar to a receiver hitch.  Hopefully that made sense.  Any ideas including pictures would be helpful. BTW I have a 1981 Toyota shortbox.  Thanks - Nick

2" square tubing? holy crap, are you gonna build your flaps outta 3/8's plate? jk
heres mine 1" square 5" long welded to frame and 3/4" square 12" long for the flap to bolt to, 1  24"x30" flap cut in half long ways makes both sides. Slid them together drilled a hole and used a pin. Takes about 5 seconds to remove or install them.

The only thing that sucked about building these was I had to file the seam down  inside the 1" sq. tube to get the 3/4" tube to slide in easily.

Yeah Kyota, I like the way you did that.  That's exactly how i said I was going to do mine but I don't know why I was thinking 2".  I will go with the 1" like you did.  I thought it was a good idea but then I saw your truck and I realized it had been done before so I don't feel as smart thinking of it now.  Anyways, I'll get some pics up when it's done, along with the full 2 1/4" exhaust coming from a LC header through a high flow cat and a flowmaster muffler. -Nick

When i did mine I almost did them like Kyotas but instead I welded 4 5/16ths nuts to the 1" and used 3/4" long bolts and washered both sides of the flap.  I then welded 3/4" tube to the frame.  You should see how Shawnb did his!  He used 16 3/8ths bolts! otherwise they are the same.  Now if he could just keep from breaking the brackets off the frame because of the crappy welder and the added weight they would be burly looking.  Ill post fresh pics of mine tomorrow when I get Shawns camera.
