91 22re reving funny
« on: Nov 12, 2007, 05:04:48 PM »
When ever my 91 model is idleing, and i turn on the AC, it starts to idle up and down constantly like the compresser is kicking on and off. I know it should do it every now any then but its...up and down up and down up and down. Again it only does it at idle. Any opinions on what this could be? Ive never had a toyota with AC so im lost :gap:

Could be air bubble in the cooling system or the tps is mal-adjusted.

hmmm, no idea about fuel injected 22r's... It idles around 1100 rpm also if that tells you anything. Im going to go over it good this evening checking the timing and everything.

Adjust your timing and idle. My 90 did that before I tuned it.

Yup, forgot to mention to start with your idle.  Doesn't have to be too high before it'll starte surging.

In order:

Adjust Timing 5*BTDC
Adjust Idle to 850RPM
Adjust TPS to FSM spec.

ok thanks alot. i got another problem now. The motor is making a fairly load tapping noise. Sounds really like a valve out of adjustment, but i checked all the valves and they were adjusted almost perfect. I went ahead and got them just right but the noise is still there. Im hoping its the injectors... I tried the seafoam treatment, but no luck yet. I guess my questions is how can i figure out if its injectors making the noise? As far as i can tell it is on the top end of the engine. I even pulled plugs one at a time and the noise persisted throughout that process. Thanks alot for the help.

Forgot to add, my timing chain is due to be replaced by feeling of it while i had the valve cover off, but im pretty sure thats not making the noise im hearing. Its almost more of a click than a tap.

were the timing chain guides intact? The chain slapping the cover sounds about like what you're describing.

OK, you are right the idle is supposed go up and down with the ac on. Check and make sure that the compressor is not cycling on and off as the idle goes up & down. If it is you could be low on refrigerant, if not there maybe a problem with you ac idle up solenoid. As far as the timing chain goes, I would say its time for a new one.

yea def time for a chain, but the noise isnt comming from there. Its in the valve train. The valves ar at 8 and 12, but i guess it could just need a valve job or somthing. Im about to head over to a guy that only works on toyotas and knows what hes doing, ill see what he thinks about the racket.

I went to every other shop around here and they say that noise is normal, alittle bit loud, but normal. Another thing that its got 10-30 in in it right now, tomorrow ill put some 20-50 castrol and see if that dampens it any.thanks for the help.
