Is there any tips or tricks you guys have for removal and replacement of the "short side" axel shaft?

I have another complete stock front axel as a donor.  I have gears and a locker in my truck now, just have a broken axel shaft, everything else is fine.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

:flamer: the housing off pull the axle put the new one in and weld the housing back on oh and try to get it strait when you weld it lol :hammer: :dunno:

Housing?

Maybe I didn't make it clear.  I don't want to swap housings.  I broke an axel shaft, not the tube. I want to change the short side shaft.  The spare is a stock unit, just donor parts.  I want to keep my diff. with gears and a locker.

Your solution has 1 flaw.

I figure these guys are about done having their fun. Here is the information you seek.
After pulling the CV axles, use 2 screwdrivers to pry axles out. Pull chunk if axle is broken in carrier. Pry out stubb. It is held in by a ring.

Your all mean!

Option 1 :Got a welder? weld some scrap to the stub, and pull it out. You must ground the axle stub, not on the housing or anywhere else. the current could ark and weld the stub in, or worse your bearings together. So grouns clamp the scrap steel.

Option 2 : Drill and tap the stud shaft, Bolt something onit to pull it out.

Option 3 : Take the diff out, and dissasemble enough to push it out from the inside.

Option 4 : disasemble on the truck, and press it out from the inside.

Disasemble can be trouble if the stub is broke to where the carrier wont come out. If the carier wont come out, you can't get the ring gear off to pull the center pin. The center pin is in the way from pushing something thru from the other side

Its my job to arrange the meeting!

Huhwhye

Good idea.  I have a lock-rite in the front

I will check it out.  But I think it was working because I was still turning the left front after the shaft broke.  But its better to check while I have it apart anyway.
