theres also a dvd maker program on mine... and comic book maker... and a whole :pokinit: ton of stuff that is cool....with the regualr mac books you can buy leopard (new operating system they just came out with) and it lets you run windows without spending the extra grand for a macbook pro. its a smaller screen but lighter and easier to lug around in a backpack for school. mines 13 inch and its perfect for class. not to big but not to small either. its clear as flopp also....i could go on and on but dont feel like it. it was a good purchase non the less...if you check out that web link it will show you all the cool :pokinit: that this comp has

Here you go.  this is what Firefighters and Tel-co techs use on site.  You could take this on the Con with you and not have to worry.

OK, back to reality.

I'm going to assume that your number one reason for wanting a laptop is mobility. if not get a desktop.  :twocents:

Toshiba make some good laptops (mine took a beating before it finally died) but their customer service really sucks, but the comp was rock solid.  Currently (I hate to say this) I have a Dell Latitude D620 with a Duo Core 2.00GHz processor and only 1GB of RAM.  It is work issued and it's holding up fairly well.  you can easily get a laptop with 2 to 4 Gigs of memory now.  I think it was around $1200 which is what your going to spend on something decent easily.

Built in DVD/CD writers are pretty much standard now, so that shouldn't be a problem.  Also if you get something new it will have Vista on it, unless you blow that out and reinstall with something else.
There are five different versions so get the one that is appropriate for what you want to do.

Home premium comes with Media center, but Ultimate comes some more bells and whistles including movie maker.  (I of course cannot tell you how well any of it works)  I wouldn't recomend serious video editing on a laptop either unless you have patience.   :gap:

Get something that your happy with that you think will suite your needs for atleast a year or two.

Good luck!  and enjoy
