Pinion angle issure 3rd member flip
« on: Oct 22, 2007, 08:14:48 PM »
I have an 86 sas 4runner and I have a pinion angle issue. My funds are lacking and I want my front driveline issue resolved. I was talking to a co-worker of mine and he said you may be able to remove the front 3rd member and flip it 180 degrees to fix pinion angle problems. Has anyone ever heard of this? Is it possible? I know the gear oil wouldn't sling as well but, has anyone tried it before? please give info.

I dont think it would work. I had a friend who fliped his chevy rearend over so he could lower his truck and the truck had 3 speeds in reverse and 1 in forward. It has something to do with the ring gear being on the otherside of the pinion gear changes the rotation. It is hard to explain but I hope you understand what I am saying.

NO. you wouldn't have any oiling to the pinion bearings, and it would rotate the wrong direction.  I've seen it with 60s(in a comp buggy), but you have to modify the oiling system.

No,you can't if you look at your housing you will see two notches where the ring gear goes, if you flipped it it would not go in. What your friend saw was probably a high pinion.

IIRC the toy front 3rd is the same as rear third, thus it is running on the coast side of the gear. So, by clocking the 3rd 180 you would be driving on the drive side of the ring teeth. Correct that you would then drive backwards. The only way I've heard of flipping a standard 3rd is when folks put the engine behind the cab such as in buggies.

Degree shims would be the easiest fix to the angle problem, the other way would be to cut the perches off of the axle, rotate the axle, and weld the perches back on. Either way will bring the rear of the third up, matching the angle of the t/case output and reducing the angle of the D/S.

edit: sorry, didn't notice the hysteer. next post, very good write-up. best option.

It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Look closer at the front cover... drain plug on left, ring gear dentation on right. That is Reversed. A high pinion would have the ring gear on the same side. This is a clocked front 3rd

edit to add: Good write up on 4x4wire on pointing your front third while keeping your caster angle correct.

I have done this and it turns out nicely. Drives well, no Death wobble. Cheap as well, your only cost really is the tool rental.
