22RE gas mileage?

I have a stock 86 runner with an auto an I'm getting a whooping 12 mpg. Something's messed here. Any thought as to what the problem may be?

Put a 5 speed in it and your mileage will go WAY up.

Really, you think so? Would that make it so it would go over 65 on the highway and the wheels would turn when I tried to go up a hill.    Tell me something I don't know. Anyway I'm about sick of automatics, nice to drive but $$$ when they break. I've got an 88 truck to use for parts, how would I know which tranny it's got? Back to the mileage thingy, I was thinkin maybe the O2 sensor.

O2 will usually throw a code if its bad. it also has very little to do with mileage. Check the TPS first. Also check the coolant temp sensor(not the one for the gauge. There is a different one for the computer)and the cold start injector circuit(first make sure the injector isn't leaking, then check the time switch which is right next to the engine temp sensor). Have you done a tuneup lately? Change your plugs and adjust the valves. Also make sure all the vacuum lines are intacted.

Up in Colorado on low octane I was getting 30 mpg downhill, but uphill took all the rig had.  Around town in CT I am getting 25 mpg.  Or is that 25 Mph. I can't recall which gauge I look at more.

you really should be getting at least 20 mpg,  is it  a high mileage  engine?? new plugs wires and a O2 sensor couldnt hurt, but check supratrucks stuff too

My girlfriend had the same problem. I did a full tune-up.  PCV valve and all.  That didn't help.  It's good to do but didn't solve the problem.  I then had the tranny flushed.  WOW!!  What a difference.  The fluid that was in there was no good and was causing the valves in the tranny to stick = no power.  I would highly recommend this.  When I checked the fluid before it didn't seem to bad but it was.  I was all ready to change the gearing in it.  Luckily I tried this first.       It also helped out the mileage.  Don't expect to much out of an automatic.  Weakest part Toyota ever put out.

man, that's terrible.  my 20R with 300,000 miles gets 23mpg on average

yea man, my 20/22 hybrid with weber and LC460 cam,  gets 17 mpg,  and thats  running  back and forth to work on the interstate at 4000rpm  :.order:

I installed a O2 sensor which was made for a 2WD 92 Toyota extra cab and put it in my 2WD 94 std cab. The Denso O2 sensor model numbers are different between the models and I am wondering if that is one of the reasons my gas mileage is way down.

I've only been through 1 tank of gas on my 85, but that tank was 22mpg.
My '01 4runner gets 21-22 average.

damn you guys are lucky i have a 93 4runner 22re 5 speed and i get 14 miles per gallon. Thats all stop and go busy vegas traffic but i think something is wrong.

I think Im getting 22 on my truck, its got a new engine but only gos to fourth gear....thats with a check engine light on too, I need to fix that...it comes up with lean condition detected....if you have any ideas for me, pm me, dont make me jack his thread
