toy axle swap Q
« on: Sep 29, 2007, 10:39:53 PM »
So I get it that the stock sami rear diff is offset by about 4-5 inches to the right which is why so may people run CV driveshafts in the rear when they switch to toyota axles which are centered. But since I will need to weld on new spring perches anyway, couldn't I just offset both of them 3" to the right and run a 3" spacer on one side so the wheelbase would still be equal on both sides but it would get the diff closer to center which should help eliminate some of the d-shaft vibes. Sure there is a little bit of extra leverage on the wheel bearings on that side but samis are really light and a lot of fullsize yotas are running 3" spacers anyway

Please share your opinions

i think you would be better off buying an offset rear housing that either Sky or Trail Tough sells... id be afraid to do that.

X2

Those diamond axles are somewhat affordable and you can design them to whatever specs you need. I would check into something like that, safer is better.

AHh didnt know about those. I would go with Joe's suggestion as the diamond axles are about twice that much

You could use a later FJ rear end. My friend put that on his 88 tin top. The front was and 85 hilux axle and the rear was from the FJ. The year i really don't know. Axle was off 76 FJ40
