Yotadave's 87' 4Runner going to Moab Build!!!
« on: Sep 26, 2007, 11:35:51 PM »
OK building Toyotas is more addictive than I ever thought, so here I go on another build.  I bought this 87 4Runner just for a DD, picked it up for $2k, 30k on a rebuilt engine, stage 2 clutch, AllPro SAS with hysteer , and some NWOR 1.5" lift springs in the back with 3.5" blocks to level, running 35 Wrangler MTs with 4.88 gears in an open V6 diff and a spooled 4cyl diff.  It also came with an extra set of doors, an extra shell that has been bobbed, also the engine was massaged by his brother who is a master tech at a local Yota dealer, all toyota parts in the rebuild except the pistons.  Long story short too many of my buddies were bailing on our end of Oct Moab run and I've got a brother that I converted from jeep to Toyota and after talks we decided it would be a good idea  to finish and correct an already started build on my 4runner than try and build his bone stock 86 4runner.  So we have a month to get it ready to hit Moab and be able to keep up with my blue pickup I built last winter, (build link http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=29660.0). Parts are already starting to arrive and things are set in motion.  First week I had it, I overestimated the brakes and rearended a jeep, the sucker was running 33's with a 37" spare on the back, needless to say at 20mph it still did decent damage.  A step back but a lesson in body work, or body swap. pics:

Donor truck (a past potential flatbed work truck build sacrificed for different uses)

And after a weekend its finished, I love rustoleum! The bumper came from my 85 pickup, and the fenders and front panel from the 88 pickup.

This is our starting point, parts and mods to add:
-MC Rear Lift with HD 6" springs
-Replace the front Ford shock towers with lg MC shock Hoops
(Forgot to mention the previous owner was already running Bilsteins F&R!)
-new diff from Marlin with a Lockrite and 4.88s to replace the open V6 diff
-Fab Half doors, rocksliders, bumpers and interior roll cage
-wheelspacers and a run over the brakes to see what needs replacing  :hammerhead:
-Misc axle cleanup and a good coat of rustoleum on all the previous mods, rust comes quick here
