The two nuts and the washer inbetween them have came loose twice now.  I have torqued them and it seems after going wheeling they come loose.  It's only happening on the drivers side.  Do i need a new washer with the tabs?

are they stock hubs?what two nuts.should only be one nut, washer and cone washer if its stock..
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

Are you talking about the big nuts that preload the wheel bearings ?

They cannot possibly come loose unless something (likely the locking tab(s) on the washer) or something wasn't put together properly in the first place.

Ya, im talking about the big nuts in the hubs.  I took it apart and then put it all back together.  The washer with the tabs looks like it has seen better day.  One tab broke off when I was holding it.  So i guess i will get another one.

Are you sure that you are setting the bearings all the way on the spindle and and preloading them right ? Cause if there not installed right by getting them on all the way it will cause them to loosen up

I don't know about the last time but they are on right know.  torqued to 55 pounds and then backed off and then hand tight on the inner one.  Just torqed to 55 pounds on the outer one.  My shop teacher was whatching me so i didn't do anything wrong.  I guess they weren't put together right last time.

If they get loose again you might have a spun race.

55 pounds? Seems kinda high to me. I torque to 33, spin the wheel, retorque, then loosen and tighten a touch past hand tight. The outer one I tighten to 23ft-lbs. Haven't had any problems in twenty years.

I think the book says 75 ft lb on the outer nut. Remember to recheck the preload after as it will change. Use a new star washer and fold more than one. Save the other ones for trail repair or carry extras. The drivers side will tend to naturally come loose. The wheel direction will try to loosen it. Try new nuts iff you still have problems. Not too expensive at the dealer. 6.23 for the nut and 1.97 for the washer. List price.

This is the relevant page from my '84 FSM. Torques are quite a bit lower than 75ft-lbs. (sorry for the large size of the pic)

one more thing to check for. the nut/lock tab washer & locknut may not be backing out at all, but the bearing preload is loosing up due to spun inner wheel bearing ( the evidence will show up as a worn edge / sharp edge on the inner bearing shoulder on the spindle. larger tires/ high milage will increase this wear on the spindle.possible fix is to replace the spindle/ wheel bearings & keep close watch on bearing preloads.33" tires  sizes seem to be the limit that the toyota spindles (solid axle front) can handle on high milage trucks with out problems .imo.when I ran 37" mtrs on my pu the spindle wear was excessive ( would loosen up about every 2-3k miles.those spindles from toyota usa are quite$$$$$$$$. hope this helps .toyrocs

Well, after a day at PC my hub deicded to come loose again.  This was about 2 weeks ago.  I had to be towed home, $$.  The 2 nuts and the spindles's threads were both screwed.  the rotor was also screwed.  It was a good thing i had spares laying around or i might not have been able to run the con memorial day.  So i replaced the rotor, spindle and the nuts with ones i had off of an 83 axle.  I bought a new tab washer thingy and it hasn't came loose since.
