For now I will leave the leafs and have a small flat bed for a spare and cooler like Shoyrtt's. It is still bone stock with a body lift (which will go away :flamer:) I just did the body stuff first cause I was watching cement dry, Literaly I had poured a footing for my jib crane and since it was so cold (  ::)So cold like in the 50s dont ya love so cal? :gap:) it took 8 hours to be able to finish. The intent here is to have a simple reliable family wagon which will seat 4 or 5 and have heat, air, and be cablable enough to run any of the hammer trails. I don't have to follow JRT or the benders but get to the top and hang out. I get most of the inspiration for this one from Jim (Shoyrtt) let me practice doing his rig, Troy from cal mini trucks, I love that family truckster and Locktup for the body triming idea.

More later

I like the mini flatbed idea!   Sounds cool.   Looks like your having fun with the build. Continue with that enjoyment it's really looking good.  :beerchug:

Looking good Wayne!!!!!!!!!!! :bananasplit: :crazyjumpy: :afro2: :afro: :bling: :bayer: :bandit:  :booya: :best: :egyptian: :rockingout:

I really like the idea of moving the tail light buckets up in the body to keep the lines clean. I haven't seen that before.

Are you going to still try to keep the tailgate functional, or the stock rear glass?  :dunno:

I'll give you a call later.

Thanks Jim I got your rig dirty with all the sanding and grinding sorry :smack:

I want to keep it street legal so the lights had to fit in there somewhere.

I would like to keep the gate functional and the glass working. I know I can keep the glass but it will not open all the way. I may try a peice of lexan for the window to save weight. I think I have a way of keeping the gate too but it will not open without the body lift so it may be inoperable until I break down and link the thing. I will need to pour a bunch more cold weather cement to figure it out :gap:

I need some Felix help when you get an afternoon.

The "other side" pic threw me off a bit with the reconfigured shop. :headscratch: After four days at the Rose Parade (and one with sleep deprivation) I'm still getting back to reality. :disturbed:

Page 2 needs another picture. :)

I got an hour or so on it again last night. Here is a pic of the progress. I got the final cut on the driver side done and the flair end on, now I need to weld in the wheel well metal. The tail light bucket won't work like I thought so I am rethinking that one. I was eyeing 90s chevy truck lights on the way to work this morning and I may be able to get them to fit. Any Ideas are appreciated.

Do you want something that looks factory?  If not, how about some LED's?

ZukIzzy

I have a bunch of those but wanted something that looks factory.

The first gen p/u tail lights have a lot less wrap around if that would make it any easier.  They may even be a bit shorter.

fordh8r

Cadillac, Olds and some Buick taillights might work.  They can be narrow and some even tall.  One of those might work.  :beerchug:

So I take it the Toyota lights are too tall to work? :dunno: How about the late 80s Dodge D-50 / Mitsubishi truck taillights. If I remember right the configuration is the same (red, white and amber) and they are a little shorter than the Toy. :crossed:

Edit: Here is the 88 D-50 (nice stacks :stopit:)

the toyota lights are too wide and  the curve does not match the top portion of the body very well. Funny you mention Mitsu lights. I spent an hour in the P-A-P ontario today and found 2 that are promissing. The early Dodge Ram mini truck that was built by Mitsubishi. The curve is right and they plug right ino to the Toyota harness. The problems are they are a bit tall and they have a wierd bump to match a body line :-\ The 90s Isuzu trooper also plug right in  and fit  the space well but dont have much curve. Not sure it matters for a 4x4 but I bought both and will get a few minutes tonight to work on them.

Edit: I also bought a set of 95 chevy lights and they are the best fit but would like to have amber turns.

Ps Jim how can you find a pic of ANYTHING in a moments notice :dunno:

I would lose the tailgate and the glass. Find a cab high camper shell and use the glass/lexan hatch piece, along with a pickup tailgate. You will gain about 4inches inside and lose some weight. Looking good so far!
`87 runner....it was stock....now sas'd, 37's, duals, geared/ locked, 10in bob, half doors, rock lights. etc., etc.,.........coming soon a 3.4 swap!!!

Google image search ;)

What are the long term plans for rollover protection? Internal of exo cage?
If you go with an exo and a flat bed, won't these corners get covered up? :headscratch:

How about making the corners smooth and running a set of the street truck LED lights? I'll try to find a picture.

Edit: Like this :eyebrow:

Hey guys thanks for the help. I got  it worked out last night. what worked best was just to trim up the stock light and bucket. Not a perfect fit but good enough for a rock crawling rig.

Tonight I will do the other side and maybe even get the gate trimed and in place.

First I wanna say Thanks to  Shoyrtt for the help saturday. I had to work on my Comp ride for next year so he went to town on the clean up of the interior solo.  Jedrattle also showed up to lend a hand. thanks Shaun  We put him to work on the comp rig.

I got a couple hours on the runner friday night, far from done but here you can see it coming together.

Is the rear glass gonna roll all the way down? Those corners turned out nice. What tail lights did you wind up using? They appear to be cut down to fit, are they?

The glass does not roll all the way down, but I think I can make something to work later. Stock tail lights cut down worked best. The fit is not great but good enough for a 4x4.

No new progress on the runner but I did get to test my new Jib crane

Yep it will lift a 12 year old.

I also started training new slave labor EEERRR I mean Employee

Then we tested the flex on JRTs rig with the new axle

Flexes pretty well but we are having a hard time getting air shocks that Measure 12" compressed and  50" extended. I even tried the new math and it just did not seem to work.

A mor realistic flex pic.

19" compressed and 46" Extended. I know the math does not work but we have a secret weapon.

I will get back on this in a few days.

Looking good on the buggy. The the 64K question though is whether or not a pool has been established as to how long it will take JRT to break the new axle? :hahaha:

BTW: Child labor laws in CA are strictly enforced. :shhh: :rofl2:

Well since He was never able to  break a 30 spline Longfeild and I am driving next year. I say we don't break it until the parts tester drives in the Womens event next year.

NO problem I just added to his chores.
