Idea for beefing the 05+ c-channel frame
« on: Sep 05, 2007, 04:21:07 PM »
Just got an 07' regular cab taco.  I hate that darn c-channel frame. I was thinking I could get a beefy set of rock sliders that mount to the frame with a full length plate. Man-a-fre makes these for the FJ Cruiser as bolt-on units. I could drill and bolt them to the taco c-channels between the tranny crossmember and the rear spring hangers. I would think this would make the frame in that section at least as rigid as the pre '96 fully boxed frames. I could go a step further and add one or two extra crossmember which would mount to the bottom of the sliders and add even more stiffness.

This setup may be better than welding plating to the inside of the c-channel to box the frame. It is cheaper, easier, and can be unbolted if needed.

Thoughts?  Would you be satisfied with a c-channel if you could do this??

Adding sliders to the frame will not increase the strength of the frame. In fact it could weaken it instead if not properly installed.

Boxing the frame will definitely add extra strength, but at the cost of messing up the temper of the frame.

Unless it is a problem I would not mess with it.
