Fj 40 engine questions
« on: Aug 28, 2007, 03:54:42 PM »
ok i am yoda die hard and looking for a fj 40 but i have found alot with 2f motor that just are  not very powerful. So i see these fjs with 350  i know due not knock what you have not tried. So i am thinking about if i get on would the new 2.7 fit in the engine bay??????Has good power 150 and good torque numbers. Axle should not implode with a 4 right????

So what due you guys think is it possible or is the 2f good on angles and climbs.

Keep the 2f.  It is a great motor and has good torque. Tey are almost indistructable A 2.7 would be gutless.

I liked the ol 6 I had in my FJ55. It was fun torquing up stuff, got good mileage and was extremely reliable. The only downfall was freeway and long grades. Try getting the 2F running and see what you think. Small blocks rip! They are much better suited to pulling grades, pulling a trailer and in the mud and sand. On the down side, you need to get used to running out of gas or carry extra. They tend to overheat, you end up modifying your rig chasing out weak links, as your more prone to breakage, and have a truck load of non Toyota parts in your rig. There are guys out there with the 2.7 in their Cruzahs but youd have to wire in a computer and harness. 2.7s are great motors, idle down to like 500 rpm without stalling and get ok mileage. My Taco has a tough time pulling 5th with 31's running stock gears... but thats my only complaint. A change in gearing would make all the difference.
It all depends on what you want it to do, and how bad you want it

A 2F is exactly powerfull at the point where its needed.........low down, not in high revs.

Keep the 2F and try out before you decide by a piece of paper whats what, main reason for conversions is lower part prices and better availability of chevy stuff in the US.

I agree with everyone the 2F is a great motor.  I built myself a 40 with 3RZ and I personelly like it alot.  I am running 5.29's and 37in tires and it pulls pretty decent.  I have one with a 383 in it as well and it definately has more BALLS than need be I have broken tons of stuff with alot of go pedal.  If you are ever in WA you can come take the 3RZ for a drive.

To put my last post in prespective I have my new cruiser down to 3200lbs.  I pretty much rebuilt the tub out of aluminum and composite (holeshot high clearance hood).  I am also running mini truck axles, tranny and t/case (w/4.7's).  I saved weight everywhere I possibly could so the 3RZ pulls the lighter cruiser around pretty well.

And spank it does...  you should hear it spool up in a bax canyon where it can echo.  Simply awesome.

What Jason neglected to mention is he is not only turboed but propane as well.  One of the coolest cruisers I know of.

I must add that I DIG my V8.  I run a SBC 350 and an SM465 tranny.  I have the power to spin 'em real hard when I need to like in sand or mud but still have plenty of torque for crawlin'.

My opinion is this:

If your 2F is in good working order you'd be nuts to go through the hassle and expense of swapping it out.  The Toyota I6 is an outstanding motor and you can squeeze a bit more out of her if you need to.

If your 2F is hammered and/or dead then a rebuild will be costly.  At this point an engine swap would be a feasable option.  The SBC is a very common and popular swap and rather straight forward as far as swaps go.  There are other options out there tooif you want something a bit more exotic...
