79 on fullwidth axles
« on: Aug 27, 2007, 11:06:21 AM »
I have a 79 that is anything but pretty, but it does relatively well in the rocks for only having t-case gears.  I am wondering the benefits and drawbacks of going fullwidth axles?  Also, what axle would be best and even stronger than a longfield toy?  I have heard the D-60's are good, but what years and out of what kind of truck?  Can I still run my toy setup (t-case) if I just re-work the d-shafts (yokes)?  Thanks for any advice.

I would also go 60 & 14bolt I've wheeled with fullwidths on my old toy for about 4 years and have built a few more with fullwidth axles. Just get some hysteer arms and make a drag link and tierod. you can also get a toyota flange for the dana 60 and the 14 bolt from high angle driveline.
The statistic on sanity is that One in every four is insane, Think of your three best friends if they're ok then its you.

I am running d60 f&r with dual toyota cases and yota driveshafts with yota springs I got my axles off my buddies 82 one ton chevy truck they are alot more stronger than my other 4runner with birfields. The only draw back is the added amount of weight but i can still drive my on the freeway at 95 mph
88 4runner 92 cpi duals 37 radial rockers and 4.8 coming soon

any big drawbacks of having fullwidth axles?  I have a buddy with d-44 axles on his samari and it works really well.  I am just trying to get a good idea of what problems I might have or better yet, the good that will come from them (besides being stronger with a d60).  How hard is it to make hysteer for these axles...or is there a kit (that doesn't cost mucho $$)?  Not too worried about the extra weight, this is a trail only rig and probably won't see much over 20mph.

BIG TIRES + minimal lift =

plus you'll have more unsprung weight, which sucks high speed handling, but is cool for you cause it makes more droop.
and your much wider wheel base will have more leverage on your springs which would make more travel as well. That would be a good setup for a buggy leaf...

...and remember, burn tires-not drugs!  :disturbed:

I have seen 14 polts go as cheap as 75 bucks.. I wouldn't pay no more then 150 for a 14 bolt... 60's on the other hand are extremly expensive... if you can fin a GM 60 front, they seem to be the cheaper version, but I believe they have a LP

there are 3 versions of the 14 bolt from gm.
9.5" 3/4 ton semi-floater. little more expensive to get a locker for and not a full floater (but highly unlikely to break still). offered in both 6 lug and 8 lug.

10.5" ring gear 1 ton full floater. much stronger but also has much less ground clearance (housing can be trimmed). cheaper to get a locker for, and if you should break an axle shaft the wheel wont go anywhere (unlike a semi-floater). comes in both single wheel and dually options, but the hubs are interchangable.

11.5" ring gear 1 ton full floater. this comes behind the duramax and is the strongest.

looks like I'm getting fullwidths :talkingn: um...uh...

Just trying to make sure...I found a 14 for $50 (65 if I give my bro some gas money to pic it up).  Not sure about the specs, but since it is 50 I'm goin' for it (came off of a 3/4 ton 81 chevy...2wd...I am guessing it is the 9.5 from what red said).  Now all I have to do is find a D60 that is in my price range.  Thanks for the info!!

yep its the 9.5 (or 9.75 can remember which size it is). the 2wd is going to be slightly skinnier than a 4x4 axle but you could just run wheel spacers if need be. is it the 6 lug or 8 lug? take a picture of the differential housing, if its kinda oval shaped its the 9.5, if its irregularly shaped its the 10.5 (81 had the full floater, but the semi-floater might not have been around at that time).
