Newbie - Colorado
« on: Apr 27, 2004, 09:47:23 PM »
Hey guys. I just purchased my first 4wd. A gourgeous 83 toyota pickup. All original, 200,000 miles on the 22r, all for just $200!! All it needds is a new battery, and a new attitude obviously. I'll post some pics as soon as I get some time. Any suggestions of where to start?? I'd really like some pics of Marlins front bumper thats shown in the armory on the red pickup if anyone has some. Thanks a lot

Damn you may have beat me on that one.  I bought a 81 for $300 that needed a windshield.  I think your starting off cheaper than me!  Good choice on buying a yota and you deffinately came to the right place for info!

Welcome to the board    That sounds like a hell of a deal  Well I think before we can give you are suggestions about what you need to do I think you should make it clear on your intentions for your truck. That way we know what you are looking to get out of it and how you want it to perform.

Of course. I am looking to make it into something that do moderate to advanced wheeling. I live in Colorado and the rocky mountains are in my backyard so I'll be doing a lot of rock crawling and forest running. Not much mud if ever and quite a bit of hill climbing. After looking around I was thinking about starting with a 2 inch body lift, 3 inch springs, and 35's with marlins transfer case gears eventually. I have an option on the table for a set of F&R ring and pinions (4.88) for $150 never used. I'd also like a lock-right when I do the r and p's. I want to buy some used hy-steer arms and then get the rest of the arts or make them myself. Oh, Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent mig welder I can start out on? I learned how to weld at my job and would like to try fabricating a few parts for my rig. Nothing yet that my life would depend on, just little stuff till I get more confident in my welds. THanks guys, pics will be up tomorrow of my $200 SCORE!

Well a good all around suspension I would suggest would be All Pros. There Top notch system will clear  35's and be able to climb hills and crawl rocks with very little trouble. It's a good moderate to advance suspension. And you will get to put a little bit of your new aquired welding skills to use putting the lift on.  And for around the house fabbing a little millermatic 130 with flux core would do pretty good for starting out. It would put that lift kit together no problem. As for the price on those 4.88's, that is a smoking deal I think, I just don't think that they are low enough for a yota 4 cylinder to turn over a set of 35's efficiently  :dunno:

I know 4.88's are a bit high, but I'm planning on marlins crawler too and I like the strength of the 4.88's. I'm also not going to be doing any really extreme rock crawling yet. I like the idea of trying to build this truck for under $1,000 (not including tools and the welder I'm gonna buy) It started snowing this morning really hard so I can't get pics yet... Man, it was 80 here yestertday...well thats Colorado
