Balance or no balance(bottem end)
« on: Aug 20, 2007, 03:19:26 PM »
Ok ive got 2 options. My local machine shop will not balance a bottme end. I can take it to a very good machine shop thats about a 2 hour drive from where i live, and they will balance for around 150.

So what kind of pros and cons am i looking at for a balanced bottem end? Thanks.

Balancing is deffinitely worth it. The engine will rev. up smoother, and last longer. An imbalanced rotating assembly will shorten bearing, and ring life. At higher revs., the engine wont have that feeling like its about to let go(unless you're REALLY reving it).

Balancing is not necessary, unless you have change the weight of the rods, pistons etc.

well unless you had it blueprinted  and everything put in little baggies,   you changed the weight of the rods, pistons etc

and ive NEVER  bought a set of pistons  off the shelf  that were the same exact weight

get real

I mean like from cast to forged. I have never balanced any of the stock rebuilds I have done and have done plenty and never have had a problem. The only engines I have balanced were ones that I went to forged pistons with different pins and the rods were changed or polished. Oh and as far as putting everything in little baggies, is there any other way.

well  when i pull the piston  i  put the cap back on the rod with the nuts,  but  yea  if  you weigh everything when you go back  many times a set of pistons from the same box  can be as much as a gram off,  i have built motors  that i didnt balance  for one reason or another, like the one im running now  and  its just not near the motor  my previous motor that was balanced

i always  balance  :yesnod:

A machine shop that doesn't balance is out of wack to begin with  :conf: :shake_head:, do it the the right way and get it done-YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! and for the extra $150 it's well worth it in the long run and you be glad you did it, instead if you didn't you be doing this :hammerhead:
