So if you remember I was going to install my 5.29's and Aussie in the rear myself. You guys told me that I should have it installed by a shop so I did not screw anything up (thanks for the good advice). I had the gears installed last week and have been breaking them in. There still seems to be a vibration coming from the rear when I am between being on the gas and coasting, it is right at the neutral spot in the gas. Is this normal for new gears to do this when being broken in? Also after I get done driving 15 miles or so my rear diff is so hot that I can barely touch it. I am a little worried. The shop is Six States here in Utah and they have a really good rep. for doing gears and DL's. Should I be worried about this? Will things calm down after the gears are all the way broken in?

Please calm my nerves.

Thanks

Assuming you didn't change ride height when this was done I would suggest to double check the rest of your drive train for any other possibly worn or loose items such as D/L bolts, U-joints, slip shaft (also for phasing), or even a loose out put at the t-case and don't forget motor mounts and rear suspension hardware also  :yesnod:.

If all seems well it may be that the D/L needs to be rebalanced. With the new ratio it (D/L) is spinning faster than before and may have a small dent or missing balance weight which might not have been apparent before. Hope you find the problem.

I did a lift at the same time, 4" front 5" rear and put 35" tires on. I need to make sure that my DL is in the right phase but the vibration feels like it is coming from the rear of the truck.
Any other ideas??

THANKS

sorry for the hijack, but can someone clue me in on this "phaseing"? When you remove the driveshaft, is there a certain way it should be installed? My rearend with 5.29's also gets very hot. But i live in louisiana and its very hot here anyway.

For an update, my DL was out of phase and causing much of the vibration, however I am still getting some bad noises coming from the rear end. When I am at that neutral spot in my throttle, going 65 mph or so it makes a bad almost buzzing noise. I have also noticed that when I am going slow and I am on the gas I can hear metal on metal, almost like there is no oil in the diff?? I put 2 quarts in, should there be more? Also I saw that I did not have inside axle seals, only the outer ones that are out by the wheel. Am I supposed to have them?

Please help me out on this one.
Thanks a ton

So I just talked to the mechanic at Six States and told him about my problem and the noise that my diff was making, and he said that because I tried to set the diff up myself initially, and drove on it with the wrong pinion depth (10-15 miles) that it would always make that noise and that is the way that it was going to be. He also said that the gears weren't damaged at all. So I guess I am just f-ed. Could any of you gear guru's tell me if there is anything that I can do to correct this myself without buying brand new gears?

try sending a PM or email to Zuk.

Sounds like to me that the backlash is not quite set right. Thats where the noisy gear sound is probably coming from. For the two quarts, thats about what it takes, but it should be filled up to the bottom of the hole or another words until it starts to run out of the hole. For the axle seals, there should only be the outer seals. Oil run in the axle tubes as well as the diff.  ;) :yesnod:

That sounds like a complete line of bull crap. Ship your 3rd to River City Differentials. Have it done right.

Take it back to who you had do the install.

Take it back to who you had do the install.
That is who I talked to this morning, he did the setup the first of last week so he remembered me and my third.

Hey I just noticed that this is my 100th post

Have you driven it with out the rear driveshaft installed?
Start there.
If the vibration stops, then it is your driveshaft/or angles.
If you swap your front 3rd into the rear and the vibration continues (after you have done the driveshaft) then you know it is your transfer case.

SLIVER

The mechanic completely redid my crappy self install and he said that all the tolerances are correct now. If that is true, does that mean that my gears are f-ed and that's why I am getting the noise?? Or is he lying?? The shop has a very good reputation for being the best around for gears. I am thinking about pulling the third from the front and putting it in the back. What do you guys think about this??

Mini my front third is not set up yet and my front DL is about 3" too short so I have to do the square DL. If I am still having this problem when I get the front done I will try it.
Thanks for the help

Too bad he didn't tell you what he found out of whack. It's been my experience that when the gears were run for a long time and not contacting the center of the tooth....and the gears are then reset to the correct specs that there might be a whistle noise but it seems to go away with time. You gears were not run all that long anyways. Probably no damage to the gears so I say run it.

Now that the D/L is in phase, you can also rephase it 180*to see if the 2 parts of the D/L are balanced better that way instead of how they are currently mated. If it's worse then switch it back. Also since you said you lifted this during these changes be sure to look at your pinion angles as well.
Gears can typically be noisy if they are set up too tight. This is one reason for backlash. The other reasons are to allow for heat expansion of the gears and to allow the lube to flow to protect and cool the gears as well. If and when you do the front set it may not be a bad Idea to run the third you just did up front.  Since when it's in 4WD the load is split between both diffs for the most part. And if it craps out it's not one the one that's supposed to get you home.  :gap:

SLIVER

Well said fordh8r thanks for the input guys. I know that I am mostly being paranoid and every little vib and noise that my runner makes pisses me off. Just want it right thats all.

Well for an update, I took the thirds out of the truck and low and behold the rear pinion gear was hitting my carrier assembly and digging grooves in it, hence the horrible noise. So I called the guy at Six States and told him the news and he was very good about it. He admited that he did something wrong and said that he would fix it for free, so I took the front and rear thirds into him and had them back the next day. While the front gears were out I went ahead and rebuilt the knuckles and upgraded the rotors and calipers. The runner is complete with the exception of the double t-case, square front drive line, and new cross member. I will try and do a build up thread here in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for all your help on this one.
