I play stringed insturments so its amazing to see how well he plays.

For those of you who don't know, a violin is like a fretless guitar or bass... you really have to "feel" the notes because there are no easy seperations for you to physically see.

Not only that but it's dependant on the angle of the bow as to which strings he hits or doesn't hit.

I've played guitar forfreakinever and have always wondered if I could make the switch. The "violin tone" is like the Holy Grail of tones...that and the snarky Strat tone!

I've tried and honestly, it wasn't that big of a deal.  depending on how it's intonated, you either have to fret directly where the fret should be, or in the "normal" in-between area.  Hit up a local music shop and give one a shot.

I'd really like to try this as well, I'd imagine hitting the sharps and flats would be a bit tricky though because that "fret board" doesn't look very long so the distance between say for example a A flat or B would be pretty close.   EDIT :  I mean a B flat or C   :)

Btw a Violin has the largest RANGE for a stringed insturment.

You've already demonstrated that you know way more than I do about music. I am a guitar player, definitely NOT a musician. I can't read it, don't know any scales, don't know any keys. I just play by ear.

EDIT: the closest I can come is...if I'm driving and I hear thump, thump, thump, my tire might B flat!

abnormal you'd be amazed at really how EASY it is to understand scales and notes...

Example:

Start with the top string on a guitar, typically tuned to a E  right?   (EADGBE)

So its an E open strum, Fret 1 = F  Fret 2 = F # (sharp)  Fret 3 = G  Fret 4 = A b (flat)  Fret 5 = A

So on and so forth down the line... neat thing about actually learning the noted on a fret board is if you ever wanted to convert a song that you love to play on Guitar to Piano you just play the exact same notes and you'll be playing the exact same song.

Pretty fun!

Dude...you might as well be trying to teach me Swahili or Mandarin Chinese. I tried at first, but it was just so much easier to make stuff up than to "learn" the song. If I'm doing a cover...I pick up a signature lick and just let it fly with everything else. Unless a song has a bunch of chords with numbers after them and say sus or dim I can pick up most of it and fake the rest.

i just set my digital camera on the mouse pad and recorded.

 :)

Do you have speakers?  or a mic?   you can record to the free Windows record program. I used to do that alot for creating backup's and soloing over them.

I'm down to just one guitar...no amp any more. I kind of quit playing after the last band broke up and sold most of my stuff. I did, however, promise myself to at least keep the Strat. I'm getting the feeling again to get back into playing, so I might get an amp again...one of these days.

I'll probably get another Fender amp, Bassman reissue or what I got rid of...a Hot Rod DeVille. If I get a big score I may get a clone like an older Kendrick or an old brownface Tremolux (sweetest amp I've ever played). I am a tone sleeper, if it doesn't sound right to me I "can't" play...that's the only reason I like beer, if I'm off one night, the beer will help the audience appreciate it anyway.

I could never play an acoustic, I just can't get the hang of them.
