what is  the best way to patch a torn sidewall ...

Sidewall is a tough one but for a trail only rig I have seen guys patch it from the inside with the square patches used on HD truck tires.  I was told that the trick is to overlap the first one with 2-3 more going around the edge of the first one, that helps the patch hold during sidewall flex.  This is only used as a temp. solution just to get you home.

i stitched one together  with wire once  but  it  was  only a  trail/emergency fix,   im sure  it would have come apart if ran  at highway speed

You can do it on a sidewall.....But only would recomend it for a trail rig. If you run that at highway speeds that sidewall is going to heat up and you'll risk a blowout....I work at a tire shop and we won't even touch anything with a torn sidewall or puncture do to the liability issue

yeah we had to tell them that we are only goin to use it off road. they were cool with it

I had two of my 36" Iroks sidewalls slashed when they were on DD Dodge.  I had them vulcanized by a tractor place knowing that they would only be used off road.
