worst state car laws/ worst state to wheel in
« on: Jul 24, 2007, 07:25:34 PM »
I know California has some pretty far laws regarding vehicles.  But i had a friend tell me that in Illinois that if the dmv declare you vehicle as an eye sore you cant register it.  I dont know if that is true but it got me wondering, anyone heard of some pretty weird of crappy laws from Calif or other states?  And because of these laws, which state do you guys think would be the worst to try and off road in?  just a thought id been tossing around for a while.

i say CA is pretty lax about car/truck stuff, the main thing is the SMOG and mudflaps... they are pretty chill with everything else

I'd say California laws are the worst to deal with, the beauty of Ca laws though is enforcement. Nobody wants to enforce the laws on the books except for vendetta reasons. With the amount of law written most overly modded vehicles would be illegal in Ca, from lifted 4x4's to lowriders. There is so much bs on the books you'd be startled if you actually knew what is and is not legal. Just for starters everthing must be C.A.R.B. approved or it is illegal, and you must have the sticker attached to the vehicle or even if it is legal it is still illegal.  I think it is safe to say that most anyone on this board that has anything over 33" tires could be sited for your headlights being to high along with the frame. Lowriders play the other end of that scale. Komifornia is by far the leader in making it hard to do anything to a vehicle. Sure other states have things that make you go nuts but out of several states I've lived in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona and California, California is the worst. Of course since I am from CA I may be more aware of the bs involved there since that's what I used to do.

CA is probably the worst for wheeling too even though we have the most areas to do it in, it also is probably the most radical demo/liberal in the country. Plus they probably have the most nature nazis' to boot.

i agree rocksurfer. utah is great for wheeling because you can go just about anywhere and they dont care. smog is only in the larger cities (tooele doesnt have it), they're just strict on windshields.

lol as a future cop, i love the laws in ca.  it gives me pc to pull people over when i know they are doing something illegal.

although as a citizen, i hate the laws because they restrict you too much.  its like squeezing a toothpaste tube.  pretty soon there is nothing left in the tube.  ya know?

I know a couple motor officers in L.A. that play a game with traffic, what they do is make bets with each other on passing cars. Now here's the game one officer points out any vehicle driving legally down the road the other officer now has to chase down that vehicle and find a legit reason to pull it over, no fabricated reason but a real one. It gets real boring since neither one ever loses. They always seemed to be able to find a reason.

shoot i think oklahoma has got too be the easyest and best state too live and wheel in. we dont have smog, dont have inspections, they dont care about lifted veh, mud flaps, or pretty much anything, heck i used too drive my 83 around with 35's no front fenders no bed with the taillights zip tied too the back of the frame and never got pulled over.
Disney oklahoma is a town built around 4 wheeling they built the road with super wide sholders just so the wheelers could run up and down the sides and cross back and forth too the gas station too get fuel and food etc and they cops gota be the coolest around, i got pulled over one time dident have ins, tag was out of date no headlights tail lights quick working after i sunk it in a mud hole up too he hood, and the body was bashed all too heck on my old runner i thought i was gonna go too jail but he just said too keep it on the side of the highway thats why the built it so wide was for the wheelers.
If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.

AZ can be cool too, it really depends on the area but in some areas you can legally drive a quad down the street.

gah i need to get out of this state!

as far as CA laws go... ive been pulled over for a lot of things, and cited for a lot of things and spent a lot of time @ dmv and traffic court.... CA laws really arent that bad.... there are tons of other places that have way worse laws and way meaner cops, but no one ever says anything about those places....

bottom line is if you dont drive an illegally modified truck, dont drive like an idiot and keep your vehicle in proper/safe working order, they pretty much leave you alone......
