Bellhousing widths?
« on: Jul 24, 2007, 09:07:25 AM »
Hey, I'm just wondering, we got all the dimensions of toyota transmissions floating around here, but nothing on the width of the bell housing's!  What is the width of them?

The reason I was asking, I was given a exhaust manifold, and downtube that came from a 20r and the guy said I only use this manifold!  Well, he has never dealt with the R151 tranny only the L and W series trans!  And his rig has this manifold with a 22re & w56, but wont work in my truck with the R151, the twin down tube design hits the bellhousing.  I know the turbo clutch is almost an 1" larger, so I the R151 bellhousing that much larger?  I'm not gonna take my motor out to measure!  :cheese:

Sorry, Mike I was looking to see if there was any difference in how wide the bellhousing's are for the 22r's!  They mount in the same holes, but I was looking to see if any were slightly larger in diameter!  Or are they all the same!

I've gone to that post, it's all about length.  Not width!

The reason I was asking, is the exhaust manifold and downtubes I was given (big open chamber for the 20r) was supposed to work on my truck, but the down pipes hit the bellhousing, crossmember, and the torsion bar mount, and won't let me get close to the mounting flange of the ex. manifold!  Well, I got the other (header style 22r) exhaust manifold and the downpipe still doesn't work.  But to come to find out, was the twin tube downtube I was given won't work, I need the single downtube!

But I would like to know if all the bellhousings are all the same diameter?  That was my curiousity!

The bell housings are NOT any "wider" at the engine end.
The splash shield is the SAME for both (or appears to be)
yeah yeah - still IFS...

I don't see how they could be, they all bolt to the same block...I will be in storage tomorrow though, and I will double check on the width of a R151F housing for you.

This is a old post and the problems have been taken care of!  The twin tube down pipe I had was for a 2wd, not a 4wd.  For some reason there is a slight variance between the 2wd and 4wd.  I think what it is, might be that the R series bellhousings have just a little more beef to them.  I'm not sure of this, because I never had a chance to match up the bellhousings to see!
