Resurface Flywheel w/HD Clutch?
« on: Apr 16, 2004, 06:24:45 AM »
In the next month or so I'm planning to install a Marlin HD clutch kit in my 88 Toyota 4X4 truck along with a new HD w56 Marlin transmission. How much should the flywheel be resurfaced? To factory specs or more?

Thanks for the info.

I know for sure Marlin has his own specs that he goes buy that gives the clutch and flywheel a better matting surface to each other. It's in a post around here somewhere, but you could probably call the shop for that quick answer.

This is from an answer Marlin gave someone asking the same Q. The factory puts a 0.020" step in the flywheel, for maximum grab have the flywheel resurfaced with a 0.026" step. Hope this helps!

Thur the years, i have experimented with many clutch combinations and have found that a .026" flywheel step will wake up the clutch with only minimal pledal change.
Once, when i ground a .030" step, the pressure plate fingers hit the disk hub springs when the clutch was pushed to the floor.

Have you guys ever used a 30lb LC Engineering flywheel with a centerforce clutch? Is it true a heavier flywheel will help hill climbing and pulling a heavy load? If so, will it still run as good out of the hole? Do you think this would be a good setup for my rockcrawlin 4runner? I appreciate anyones opinion. Thanks

I feel that the heavyweight flywheel is a waste for rock crawling. It is true that it helps the truck off the line, but you will lose power climbing hills.

I am not a fan of centerforce clutches due to the heat that they produce and the severe side load on the crankshaft thrust washers.

Listen to marlin. He surfaced my fly wheel and combined with his SHD clutch...never been happier with a clutch.

How much did it cost to surface the flywheel and get a marlin clutch? Sounds like I'll be getting that ordered.
