death wobble
« on: Jul 08, 2007, 08:32:44 PM »
i know someone asked this a while ago but i cant find it now.

anyway....i just did a sas on my 90' 4runner v6, and sometimes when i get up to a steady speed the steering wheel starts going back and forth faster and faster until i slow way down. its very scary and i cant seam to figure it out. i dont even have to be going all that fast for it to happen. its even worse when i first start driving, after its been sitting for a while, and the tires have flat spots. but i cant blame the tires because it did the same thing when i was running 33" tires.
anyone?

what is your toe in set at? how did you align it? re-check torque all steering components. what is your set up exactly?

so the front is 1/2 inch  wider than the rear??   loosen  the  locknuts  on the  tierod  and  rotate it  to bring the front of the tires in,  1/4 inch or so

and  if the toe  is different  with  it on jacks  than it is  on the ground  you need to rebuild  the knuckles, mainly new trunion bearings,   you  will NEVER  get rid of the death wobble  with worn out  trunion bearings

just checked everything, and it turns out the wheel spacer nuts were backed off a nice bit. i guess that could have caused it. i tightened everything else and am now gonna give it an alignment.

so the front of the tires should be toed in 1/4 inch??? or toed out???

Never - tow out...that will cause the steering to go to the left or right. Tow - in is better.... if you had to make a choice. Plus, you get better traction (tow-in).

Make sure your steering arms nuts are tight.  Mine will death wobble bad if they are loose.  Check them often, after every run!

toe in is set at 1/8 inch. I think this is probably the most accurate way to set it. Get 2 pieces of (straight) steel the same length as the diameter of your tire (In my case 36 inches or 3 feet). Clamp them to the rotors and make sure they are level. Then measure and adjust tie rod until it is correct. If you have knobby tires there isnt really an "accurate" way to measure.

Both of you can solve this by using Airsoft pellets for balancing. :twocents:

ehhh, gotta use a ton of em.... just use bb's... their more effective, doesnt take as many, ya gotta break the bead anyways.... everyone says they'll speed up the rotting out of a wheel, by the time they rot the wheel out, you'll be retired n the rims will be at a scrapyard, or being melted down in a mill....

ya, it makes it nearly impossible to balance...because the lugs are so far off center, and the weights on the rim lip are just simply not effective enough

ok, i looked at that page and also went to the link at the bottom of the page. From what the two pages combined say, IMHO, is the best way to do it would be to get new tires balanced (as close as possible) then add the self balancing media, and :driving:.

anyone get the same idea?

I just finished my SAS on my 94 Toyota. I am running 48" RUF and I discovered the DW. This was a problem because of the offset spring pin coupled with the stock spring pads messed up the caster. I installed a 6* shim and verified that everything else was tightened correctly and my DW is gone. I haven't installed my steering stabilizer yet either.

Yeah, common problem with RUF.
Solution is either shims, drop the front hanger to 3.75" lower than it is on a stock solid axle truck, or in my case...BB's in the tires.
