Ok.  Just ordered a replacement and spare TRE for my '83 truck with Sky high steer.  It seems it's pretty rare to break a TRE.  So who's broken one?  I've had the HS on for 3+ years and over all sorts of stuff.

Mine broke at the beach, and no, not jumping.  It quite litterally pulled itself apart just below the ball underneath the boot.  Looking for any fresh metal marks, I could not find any, so it wasn't a clearance/binding issue.  Upon closer inspection, the paint on the pan was *rubbed* off (overtime slowly rubbed off)  But the pan wasn't dented.  And the shocks prevent further up travel.

Truck was coming down a short dune that had a "whoop" at the bottom.  Hit hard enough to bottom out the shocks (2" up travel which isn't hard to do, and I've bottomed out harder before.) and that's when the driver TRE let loose.

37" MTRs, steel wheels, IFS wheel hubs, 1.5" spacers.  Also curious if the added width created too much leverage.

Pics later.  (hopefully.)

Looks like at some point your wheels went like this /---o-\ or \---o-/ causing the TRE to break. I carry a spare just in case of that same situation. Your other TRE is probably bent also.

Tice

Mine will break here pretty soon, only because I can't get any grease in them!!! :dunno: Three of them are already sloppy.
I don't need a winch, I wheel a TOYOTA!!!!!!!

Were you on the brakes hard? Maybe coming down hill the axle wrapped forward, put the tie rod against the springs and finished off an already fatigued tie rod end.

As in toe in / toe out?  or is that as you're looking at the vehicle?     TRE were/are tight.  My toe in was adjusted/correct.  Truck isn't jumped.  I guess it's possible, just not sure how.
I will look at the other side and see if it shows signs of fatigue.   My TRE's should be here today!  :jump:

Not on the brakes.  Was coming down a hill then hit a "whoop" at the bottom, that would have shoved the axle back abruptly.

I should get a close up pic of the break.  I don't know enough to tell if it happened at once or fatigued over time.

Thanks for the replies!
