rear disc brake kits?
« on: May 27, 2007, 09:21:16 PM »
i was talking to a guy the other day that is running rear discs on his yota axles and he said he goes thru wheel bearings because the kit he has puts a lot of side load on the bearings. does anyone else have this problem? if so, is there a kit that does not cause this? i want to run rear discs on my tracker when i put the yotas under it, but not if it is gonna be causing me a lot of problems. thanks in advance...

I don't see how a disk brake kit could put a side load on an axle bearing. The caliper should float so it will follow the rotor.

:talkingn:  just the weight of the vehicle puts a helluva side load on the bearings what makes you think adding discs (which weigh a fraction of drum brakes) would cause bearing failure?
"goes thru wheel bearings" how many did he "go thru"? replaced them once? maybe he bought cheap POS bearings? replaced them more than once? maybe he didnt install them correctly? maybe his axle is bent? there are alot more things I would look at if I had a bearing problem than what you are describing ;)

what kit does your friend have?

I am not sure what kit he has. it hink he has chevy rotors if that tells you anything...

this was the only time i had heard of this, but it was enough to try and do a little asking around before i spent the time/ money to put some on... this will be on a daily driver...

what are you guys running rear discs doing about ebrake? do the kits make provisions for this?

it depends on the calipers you use. caddy calipers have the park brake built in and I think monte calipers too

hey i really dont know about any rear disc brake kits on the market that have the option of using e brake on the calipers most of the kits require you to use a drive line brake that i think is like 200 dollars wich sucks, im going to run willy mammoths brake design you can buy all the parts from a junk yard or all new stuff from an auto parts store near you the design is simple but you need to make some brackets and machine some axle parts, message him and ill bet he'll give you the run down.
