Engine Builders, need tips
« on: May 27, 2007, 06:29:05 PM »
I just bought a 94 4X4 with a freshly rebuilt 22re in it.  It hasn't been run except for a few tests to see if it would start.  I have a few questions concerning proper break in.  I don't plan to run synthetic ever in it so thats not an issue, but what weight oil should I run for break in and afterwards?  This is a stock rebuild no performance parts or anything, and a DD here in VT where the temps range from -30 in the winter to 90 in the summer.  Is there a particular way I should drive it for X number of miles to properly break things in?  Obviously I'm not going to hammer it, but should I avoid things like prolonged idling and revs above X rpm?  Any other tips?  To adjust the valves should I just let it run at idle to warm up or drive it some?  First time on a new engine for me, don't want to ruin it I guess.  Once I get my butt in gear I'll do a DD build up thread, mostly body work but I'd like to document it for myself anyway.

Thanks
Andrew

i would  use  10w30   for  break in,  start it  and let it  run at a high idle  1500 - 1900 rpms  for about 15-20 minutes
then  take it for a short spin  2-3 miles  , i wouldnt go over  3000 rpm  at this point  but  with it  around 2000rpm in 2nd  or 3rd floor it  until  you get up to 3000  this  will help seat the rings  properly

then   go  back  home,  and after  it cools enough  to handle  the  nuts  remove the valve cover  and  check the valve clearances,  if  in spec  or  maybe a tad loose,  say .010  and .012  your ok, change the oil   and  drive  basically  the same way   for  the next 500 miles  a few  full throttle pulls  but  nothing for very long  and not over  3500 rpm

Thanks, thats the kind of info I was looking for.  I certainly don't want to do any damage without knowing it.  Is 10-30 the typical oil to run or is 5-30 fine after break in?

for the next month  since  you wont be seeing any cold weather  i would run 10w40  after  the first oil change,  run that for the first 3000 miles  or  till  summer is over whichever comes first  then go back to 10w30
i would only run 5w30  in your area  thru december - feb,

i run 20w50  in my  22R  here in Arkansas

OH  and use  Castrol  its the best  for these  engines  in my opinion

I'll probably just run 10-30 it won't see much summer driving since I'll be running the motorcycle.
