simple  just get a  "wheel cylinder"  for the rear brake,  thats the part  the  hard line and  bleeder  attach too  inside the brake drum

about $10

For an upgrade get an IFS axle, or you can get a disk conversion

can a 86 or newer brake backing plate and shoes be used on a 79 or do you have to use the newer wider Axel??? the newer brakes look simpler and simple is good, but would it be an upgrade other than that. I'll be putting bigger tires on soon and more braking power would be good.

I put 90 rears on my 83, bolts right on.

BUTT, the alxe flange is smaller that for the newer drums. so, if ya put the drums on they will not be centered.

I had a machine shop make a set of spacers to fill the gap. worked fine.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Sounds good.. well the older drums still work with the 90 backing plates? I still have a couple of almost new old style sets. Someone replaced the ones on my 79 before i got it.. cleaned the adjusters too good, let it set until they froze and then drove it around on the front brakes..

you would need  to press the backing plate  off your 79 axle shaft  and  put the  90 backing plate  on the 79 axle shaft

i have no problem locking up my rear  brakes,  all i did was  a v6 master  cylinder  and  bypassed the LSPV

i looked at my wifes 94 4runner and the master cyclinder looks like it would bolt right on to my 79. Can you use the old vacuum booster with good results??

79coyotefrg

yes  use the 79 booster,  and the  90 something master

excellent... looks like the plan is... step 1 replace 79MC with  V-6 90's MC. ...step 2 install newer style brake assembly's on spare gen1 axle when i install new gears and locker.
